Mission:
Flight Of The Valkyries
Location: Various
Timeline: March 18th, 2397
[Tokyo Bridge]
Thomas turned sat back down on the centre seat. "Lt. Contact the other ships, once we detonate those explosives, we are to get the hell out of this space... fast." He tapped the combadge. "Johnson to transporter room. Let them know they can make the station go boom now."
"Aye sir" Came the reply.
It wasn't much longer, before a small explosions could be seen coming from the inside of the station, followed by another, and another,"
Thomas turned to Lt Yuvek. "That's your cue Lt. Lets get the hell out of here. And avoid crashing into any diamonds along the way."
Lieutenant Yuvek's hands were already moving before Commander Thomas finished the sentence.
"Aye, Sir." He said as he brought the Tokyo around on the best heading the damaged helm would give, The ship responded with that familiar reluctant groan.
"Relaying withdrawal order to all vessels now." The Cardassian said.
He opened the fleet channel. =/\= "Tokyo to all ships — detonation is underway, clear the area immediately. Suggest heading two-seven-mark-four to avoid the asteroid field on egress. Do not wait for formation."
He closed the channel and pushed the Tokyo's impulse engines to whatever they had left.
[USS Graf Zeppelin — Bridge]
Captain Forger watched the first explosion bloom from within the station on the main viewer, then the second, then the third in rapid succession. Ze away team did it.
"All fighters, all fighters — zis is Captain Forger of ze Graf Zeppelin." His voice cut across the fleet fighter frequency without ceremony. "Ze station is going up. Return to your carriers immediately — I mean now, not in thirty seconds. Get your ships docked and hold on."
He turned to Commander Reinholt. "How many of ze Akagi's fighters are still flying out zere?"
Commander Reinholt pulled up the fighter registry, cross-referencing with the casualty reports. "Difficult to say precisely, Captain. Best estimate — somewhere between twenty and thirty of ze Akagi's complement survived ze battle. Zey have no carrier to return to."
Captain Forger drummed his fingers once on the armrest. Twenty to thirty fighters with nowhere to go and a station about to detonate behind zem. "Ze Graf Zeppelin has capacity in ze secondary bay — it was never fully loaded before we left dock." He looked toward Commander Reinholt. "Get me a number on available berths and relay it to ze fleet frequency. Ze Akagi's pilots land here. We sort ze paperwork later."
"Aye, Captain."
"And tell zem to be quick about it." Captain Forger's eyes moved back to the viewer, where the explosions inside the station were already growing. "Ze station is not going to wait for anyone."
[Tokyo Engineering]
Zach wiped his brow and closed the last panel towards the rear of the bay and walked quickly back to the MSM. "Repair crews are nearly complete in stabilizing power," he said, half to himself. "Warp engines are online, impulse engines are stable, shields are stable..." he turned back to the bay, raising his voice. "Attention, everyone: I think we've managed to effect enough repairs to keep us together until we reach safe harbor. Great job, everyone!"
There was an enthusiastic, if exhausted, cheer from those in the engineering bay, a few slaps on people's backs. Zach noted Alexis still moving about with purpose, but didn't bring it up. She knew as well as he did there was still much work to do. "Move to secondary repair lists and standby in case essential systems fluctuate," he said, turning back to the monitor.
His eyes went wide as he saw the tracking program he'd activated had resumed, and if he was reading it right, a miracle had occurred. He looked back at Alexis. "Alexis, I have to check on something. I'll be back shortly."
"We'll hold it together, sir." Alexis was already arm deep into one of the consoles that had gone down and stayed that way, "We'll be here when you get back."
Zach grabbed a tool kit and walked quickly out of Engineering, trying to keep his emotions in check, both hope and dread.
[Starfighters]
Fubuki received the orders to retreat. She couldn't help but smile as she banked away from the Starbase. "Snowflake to all Starfighters. Pull back. Retreat back through the corridor. I repeat, all Starfighters pull back and retreat through the corridor."
"Roger that, Snowflake" Nozomi replied as she banked sharply to Starboard and fell in behind Fubuki. "How are we looking over there, Chikura?"
"I'm good. I'm on your port." Shizuru replied as she fell into formation.
"You did good out there," Nozomi applauded. "Welcome to the roost."
She paused, as if stricken with an idea.
"Roost... Rooster... how do you feel about "Rooster" as a callsign? You strike me as a "Rooster"."
"No." Shizuru said. "Because I'm not a bloody chicken!"
Nozomi chuckled. "We'll figure something out."
[Fighter bay, about 2 minutes later]
The craft came in slowly, though it was clear that the one engine left functional was at full burn. Burned was another word that could be attributed to what was once a fully functional Valkyrie-class fighter, the blackened char not evident on the nose of the craft, but it covered the rear and reached out up to and past the cockpit. Holes were visible in the wings, one seemed to be more hole than wing and the cockpit was cracked and clearly unable to contain an atmosphere. Anyone watching on a sensor screen wouldn't have seen a transponder from the bird, instead watching it come in. The pilot angled it to the side as it breached the magcon field, skidding to a stop by a wall and just sitting there as the final engine's whine vanished, the name all but wiped out by the burn, but the image of a sabre still visible on the nose.
A handful of pilots- Nozomi and Shizuru included- witnessed the landing play out from just a few yards away, and- immediately sensing that something was amiss- hurried over to investigate.
"Hello?" Nozomi called out as she climbed up onto the smoldering fuselage to try and get a better look inside of the cockpit. "Anyone in there?"
The canopy was started and cracked essentially anywhere, but there was movement inside and hands hit the canopy, before fiddling with their helmet. It was removed with a gasp, “I’m here, canopy won’t open!” The voice came through one of the holes that was there, “Can’t even blow it off.”
"Somebody get me a crowbar over here!" Nozomi called out. "We've got a pilot trapped in her craft!"
There was a rush of blonde hair as Rin emerged from somewhere. Since being discharged from Sickbay and surviving the Herald boarding action, she had made her way back down to the flight deck. "I got this Gemini," she said as she produced a type two phaser from her belt. She climbed up onto the wreck of the starfighters and slammed her fist on the cockpit hatch to get Sabre's attention.
"Sabre!" Rin called out. "Get down low!"
Grace huddled down in her seat and slammed her helmet back over her head for the most cover, unsure of what was going to happen now. “Ready!” She yelled out.
She aimed her phaser at the the location of the explosive bolts. She took a deep breath then pushed her thumb down on the trigger. The bright orange phaser beam struck one of the explosive bolts causing it to release. She then moved to the second, third, fourth, fifth and finally sixth. With each bolt now detonated she tapped on the glass with her hand again. "You push! We pull!"
Grace stood hunched in the seat, pushing up with her shoulders as hard as she could, straining with the effort, “On three, one-two-three!”
As the canopy began to lift, Rin's hands darted under the metal. She pulled with all her might, and was soon joined by several others from the flight deck ground crew. After a few moments, the canopy had been lifted enough and was pushed off the craft. It fell to the deck with a thud, landing by the side of the wrecked starfighter.
Rin held out a hand to sabre. "We competing for who did the most damage?" she asked with a smirk.
Grace stripped off her helmet and dropped it in the cockpit, then took the hand, drawing Rin in for a hug, just happy to see someone else and the sake of being alive.
“Did Ah win? Ah sure hope so, because if yours is worse off, we gotta problem!”
Rin blinked a few times in surprise. "Well, at least you didn't rip a wing off before we even got there!" she laughed.
As the others went back down the ladder, Grace managed to get herself out and finally got a good look on the outside of her craft, “Oh my gawd.” She whispered, seeing someone in the yellow of engineering hustling over, quickly recognizing Zach, “Ah think Ah need to go see one of the docs, Ah’ve been ekein’ out my O2 to get back here, what with all the leaks.” She brushed her arms, “And if Ah may recommend, don’t be in the blast radius of an explodin’ Herald main energy battery or a pair of photon torpedoes. You get a little crispy!”
"Tell us about it," Nozomi sighed.
Grace grinned at them before she started off with a wobble towards the doors that would lead her to the fighter squadron’s sickbay, her steps a bit unsteady, but she managed a cocky grin still as she saw Zach running up. “Heya, Chief, Sir,” She knew her voice would carry to the other pilots, tossing a thumb over her shoulder at the still steaming wreck, “Think you can fix her for me?”
Zach had rushed in, kit in hand, prepared for the worst. He was beyond relieved she was not only alive, but safe and relatively unharmed. As he looked past her at the pile of scrap metal masquerading as a fighter, his eyes went wide and his jaw dropped. As the others helped Grace out the door and to Sickbay, none of them noticed his eye twitch, and his face suddenly turn placid as his governor kicked in before he screamed in frustration.
[USS Tokyo Tactical Information Center]
Karuta looked down at the tactical display on one of the consoles. She reached forward and held down a button to send out a communique to all of the Starfighters. "Starfighter Pilots. This is Tokyo TIC. We cannot accept any more landings. Proceed out of the blast radius under your own flight." she said, her cool stoic Vulcan instructions relaying out.
With the base starting to go critical, they simply did not have enough time to land the current starfighters, not to mention some of them had no carrier to return to.
[USS Graf Zeppelin — Bridge]
Captain Forger caught the Tokyo TIC transmission on the bridge speakers and didn't wait.
"Open a channel to ze fighter frequency," he said to the comm officer. "All of zem."
"Channel open, Captain."
"Zis is Captain Forger of ze Graf Zeppelin to all Starfighter pilots currently wizout a carrier." He kept his voice direct, no ceremony. "Ze Graf Zeppelin is opening her secondary landing bay. If you have no ship to return to, you come to us. Lieutenant Soval, transmit our approach vector and bay coordinates to all orphaned fighter signatures now."
"Transmitting, Captain," Lieutenant Soval confirmed, fingers already moving.
Captain Forger turned to Commander Reinholt. "How long until ze secondary bay is clear enough to receive zem?"
"Two minutes, Captain. Ze deck crew is moving now."
"Tell zem zey have one." He looked back at the viewer, at the station's growing internal explosions reflected across the debris field. "And tell ze fighters to come in fast — zis station is not going to give us much time to be organized about it."
He opened the channel again. "Graf Zeppelin to all orphaned fighters — we are ready to receive you. Do not wait for permission, just land. We will sort out ze paperwork when we are clear of ze blast radius."
[Tokyo Bridge]
The turbolift opened as Devon Hunt stepped onto the bridge. His first stop probably should have been to sickbay. But in case there was a need to get back in the fight, the bridge was where he needed to be.
Lieutenant Yuvek glanced over his shoulder at the sound of the turbolift, one eyebrow lifting at the state of him.
"Lieutenant Commander Hunt." He said it without slowing his hands on the console. "I hope you and the Marines had a chance to check out a nice, relaxing spa down on the Herald base while the rest of us were up here getting shot at." he said sardonically.
Connor had begun working under the console when he heard his chiefs name come up. Sliding out from underneath he stood. "Tacticals all yours Commander."
"The owners of that spa had a horrible work ethic and didn't really believe in customer service with smile," Devon countered. "Needless to say, we had skipped out on the bill and left a pardon gift." Turning his attention to Conner, he smiled. "Thanks for taking care of her."
"Still got one hell of a scratch on her..." Connor stated as he took a secondary console, poppping open the hatch climbed in and started working on it.
In the Ready Room Talia had retrieved her son and was sitting on the sofa relieved that the worst seemed to be over, at least she hoped so.
[USS Ark Royal]
"You heard them, let's get out of here!" Maple called out, as the small explosions began to ripple through the starbase. No doubt soon they would lead to something much bigger and they needed to get clear of the area. Fast.
"I'm on it captain!" Erickson replied. His fingers danced across the helm console as he banked the Ark Royal hard to port and brought her bow to face the opening back through the asteroid field.
"Captain. The Armitage still doesn't have Engine power."
Maple looked over to Sally. Sally just gave her a nod.
"Helm, change of plans. Let's grab the Armitage and take them with us. We can't leave them behind." Maple ordered.
[USS Armitage]
The bridge of the Armitage was still a mess. Debris littered the floor and several of the bridge consoles were blown out, their cracked or smashed screens exposing the wiring and machinery behind them. Smoke still hung in the air, along with the smell of burning and blood.
"Come on..." Minori muttered to herself as she held a hyperspanner in her mouth whilst she worked on repairs to the helm console. She was laid on her back, side by side with her helm officer attempting to bypass the fused and burnt out circuits.
"You often speak to the ship Captain?" her helm officer asked as he continued with his rewiring of the console.
"Always." Minori said with a brief smirk. She took the hyperspanner out of her mouth and thrust it up into the maze of wiring and circuit boards. There was a slight spark which caught her by surprise. She withdrew her hand as she received a small electrical shock.
Her fist slammed on the deck by her side. "Damn!"
Suddenly the ship shook gently. "What the..." Minori exclaimed. "Keep at it. We're nearly there." she told her officer before pulling herself from out under the console. "Whats going on?"
Her Operations officer, moved back over to the Ops console. He had been repairing one of the power conduits which had ruptured when the Armitage had lost her nacelle. He wiped back his hair from his eyes, and tapped on his console. "Ark Royal Captain. They've locked onto us with a tractor beam. It seems like they're towing us out of the area." He explained.
"That must mean that the starbase is going to explode at any minute..." Minori said, a sense of joy flooding her. A few of the officers stopped, their eyes now focused on the viewscreen and smiles coming to their faces. "Hey, we're not out of the woods yet. We still need to get our ship flying! We can rely on the Ark Royal to get us out of here for now. But, if we can't fly under our own power, we're still a sitting duck! Keep up the repair efforts!" Minori ordered.
[Space]
The Starfleet Carriers, surrounded by their Starfighters proceeded quickly through the 'tunnel' through the dense asteroid field that they had cut earlier. The Starfighters dodged and weaved amongst them, avoiding the smaller chunks of rock and minerals. Their engines burned bright red as they made their escape. Small chunks of rock and debris bounced off their shields and hulls as they hastily made their way back to open space.
After a few tense minutes, the Tokyo burst out from the Asteroid field, quickly followed by the Graf Zepplin, The Broadsword and then the Ark Royal with the Armitage in tow. A bright white light bathed them from the center of the asteroid field. Many of the chunks of rock that used to be the planets were vaporised as the explosion ripped outwards.
The explosion had reduced not only the starbase to nothing, but reduced the once dense asteroids to that of space dust. Now, instead there was just scatters of left over rock and material and no sign of the structure. They had won- if just barely.
