| Personal History | Zach was living on Vulcan with his family when he was 13, a normal human child just trying to exist among the "boring" locals. Unfortunately, his efforts to get to know his classmates led him to flirt with the wrong girl. She was polite, he was as charming as a 13 y/o idiot could be and didn't realize he was being the "ugly Terran". She turned him down, despite his persistence, and eventually walked away. The girl's betrothed and older brother did not appreciate Zach's efforts to get to know her, and decided to teach him a lesson. They sent a message pretending to be her to lure him out to a public garden. They pinched him, stripped him naked and dropped him in a cave in the Forge at night. Their goal was to frighten him and then in the morning retrieve him. However, their nerve pinch wasn't perfected and he woke up early in the middle of the night. He decided in his stupor to walk out of the cave they'd left him in and try to return too the city. He thought he was walking towards the city lights and kept going, but realized too late he was walking towards T'Khut rising in the distance. He tried to get back to his cave, but dawn came and he was way off course. He eventually put up stones to leave an arrow toward a ridge and found another set of caves; shallower this time, but some shade. Still, the place was an oven, he overheated and passed out, ready to die. When he wasn't at home in the morning, a search was started, and the Vulcan boys confessed what they did. Peacekeepers went to search and found him in the nick of time. A Vulcan healer melded with him and pulled him back from the edge of oblivion. But doing so left some residual complications. He's always warm. His core temperature is always above human average so he frequently drinks ice cold water. If unchecked, he could die from heat exhaustion quicker than most humans. He also developed a "governor" for his emotional flare ups. When extremely emotional, the defense-mechanisms from the mind-meld would kick in and he became very Vulcan-like until he calmed down. This is with good or bad emotions, be it anger, fear or love. He returned home, but couldn't find any peace there. His new Vulcan half of his mind was in conflict with the human half it was trying to restore. He would look in the mirror and not recognize his own face. Fearing he would go mad, he realized he would need to get away from his past, literally and metaphorically. He decided he couldn't stay at home and had to go figure himself out anew. He wrote a note to his parents and then tapped into his newfound Vulcan logic and smarts to figure out how to forge papers and tap into the computer systems to get himself off planet without anyone knowing. He joined the Farris and Fairway Intergalactic Circus, the biggest traveling circus in the Federation relying on his height and clever lying to convince them he was 17 and hirable. He began with grunt work, but wound up apprenticing under their magician, The Great Santucci. He studied Santucci's craft, learning to tinker and come up with his own death-defying tricks, escape and disappearing acts, and the close-up tricks he was taught. When his mentor decided he was ready to retire, he did one final act, a "fast switch" trick, except his mentor never reappeared. Zach took over as the new "Great Santucci." Unfortunately, that came crashing down when he actually was 17. His family attended the show. They saw him and the jig was up. He could go home, and avoid fraud charges and such, but going into Starfleet was part of the deal, to keep him "solidly on the right path." Since he technically was a juvenile, his previous records and all events of his whereabouts were sealed, and he went into Starfleet starting over fresh. Given he had to design and build his own equipment for his performances, engineering seemed a natural track for him. He did well enough at the academy, keeping in touch with his family more, and eventually rebuilding those relationships. Still, he was happy to ship out and get back to living his new life, knowing his family was home if he needed them. He kept his magic items as his personal "security blanket" as he traveled, but mostly avoided discussing where he learned it. |
