[USS Tokyo Bridge]
Still firing, Connor noticed the direct hit on the Akagi. "Sir... We've lost the Akagi, command module has been destroyed, reports read mass casualties, the ships they are evacuating."
Turning, to face the Lt. "Keep firing everything we got." Thomas responded.
"Its no use Commander, our fighters are dropping like flies, our weapons aren't effective enough." Connor replied as he still did as he was ordered.
"Contact the Ark Royal, have them tend to the Akagi personel, get as many survivors as they can. The other four ships, lets fill the void left by the Akagi and the Ark Royal." Thomas walked over to the tactical station as the ship was hit by another, sending him to the side of the wall.
"Ensign Halloway can you detect the away team on the station." Thomas asked as he turned to the science station. Then down on the floor where the body of the ensign lay motionless. "Lt Monroe, can you get readings of the away team on the station."
Monroe immediately took over. "I have them sir, but I'm getting too much interference to get a lock on them. We can't transport them from this distance."
"Who said anything about beaming them out." Thomas replied as he walked back over to the centre seat. Tapping his combadge "Lt Col Ashok, you have two minutes, maximum to get your troops ready, we are sending you over to the starbase, to assist the away team."
"I only need the one, Commander." Ashok replied over his combadge, before shouting to the Marines in front of him. "Alright, Marines. It's GO time! Follow your squad leads to the drop shuttles and get ready to move out!" A unison shout could be heard in the background, before the Lieutenant Colonel added. "If you can, send their last known coordinates to me and I'll make sure they make it home."
"Sending them over to you now." Thomas replied as he motioned to Connor to do so.
Hearing the all set from the marines, Thomas turned to the Lt. "Get us close to the station. Tactical, ready to lower our shields to let the dropships out, and raise them the moment they make it."
"Bringing us in now, Sir." Lieutenant Yuvek said as the Tokyo groaned as her bulk came around rather sluggish. "Closing to transport range — thirty seconds to optimal beam-over distance."
He kept the approach angle narrow, weaving what little manoeuvrability the ship had to keep their profile thin against the starbase's batteries.
"Aye Commander." Connor replied as he waited for the ship to get a little closer, while firing, phasers and torpedoes, as well as the PDS system.
"Transport range in ten seconds," Yuvek called out, resisting the urge to weave further — any more correction now and he'd throw off the lock. He kept his hands tight on the controls, the Tokyo drifting through the narrow window of vulnerability, exposed and unmoving by necessity while Connor's barrage kept the starbase's attention divided.
He glanced toward tactical as Connor's weapons fire lit up the screen ahead of them, the Tokyo still pressing forward under fire. "Transport range — now!"
Thomas paused for just a millisecond before nodding over to tactical to proceed. "Colonel, you're good to go."
It was at that moment, the stations firing found a new target, and stopped and adjusted their targeting system. Within a matter of milliseconds, it fired on its new target, the bridge of the USS Tokyo.
"Sir..." Connor replied from tactical. "Station is retargeting the Tokyo, with its main weapons array."
"Evasive maneuvers Lt." Thomas ordered as he sat and braced.
"Evasive — hard to starboard, pitching down on the Y-axis!" Yuvek threw every ounce of thrust he could divert into the turn, fighting the Tokyo's sheer mass as it resisted, the ship answering like a beast too big and too slow to dodge what was coming for her.
The Tokyo careened to starboard, hard, however, the beam struck the ship, causing the ship to tremble, alarms go off, sparks, and lights to fall from the ceiling. Screens went dark, and the emergency lighting came on flickering.
As the beam brushed against the port outer rim of the Tokyo's saucer section it ripped through the hull and blasted the once circular shape flat. Several sections became suddenly exposed to space, and similar to the Akagi, the people working in those sections were sucked out into the void of space.
Lieutenant Yuvek was thrown hard against his console as the deck lurched beneath him. The impact threw the Helmsman clean out of his chair and onto the deck beneath him throwing him into the the edge of the secondary console behind helm. The wind was knocked out of his lungs as he impacted with the console. At the same time, sparks showered down from a ruptured conduit overhead as the lights died around him.
The helm display went fully dark for half a second before flickering back under emergency power. Smoke was already thickening near the aft stations, and somewhere behind him he heard the unmistakable hiss of an atmospheric seal struggling to hold. He pushed himself upright through the ringing in his ears, vision swimming, one hand finding the edge of his console as he hauled himself back into the seat.
Port saucer took the brunt of it. At least three hull breaches along the outer rim, structural integrity down to sixty percent there and dropping."
He glanced at a secondary display flickering with damage reports, fighting down the lightheadedness. "Decks nine through eleven on that side are open to space. Two emergency forcefields just dropped — they're not holding."
[USS Akagi]
"Commander, there's a ship coming up alongside us." Alfred Escobar called out from the jagged hole that had been sealed by a portable emergency forcefield, "It's Ark Royal."
"Well, get them on your comm and tell them where the priority beamouts are. That's your job now, when everyone else is off the ship, you go too." Jessica Avali was frantically bodging together control runs that led to the main engineering console as one of her engineers was apparently beamed away by that maniac from the runabout. "Tontis, take over from where Jenki was." The blood red numbers ticked down past four minutes, "God, if you're up there, don't let that idiot take any more of my people, not yet... Vincennes, get that camera to the bow, then call for a beamout, you have.... Two minutes and thirty, MOVE IT!"
Escobar moved over next to Avali to the console where the internal sensors had last pinpointed the remaining crew of Akagi. They had taken grievous losses already and surely there were rescue operations underway, "Ark Royal, Ark Royal, this is Akagi, Ensign Escobar speaking, Commander Avali wants me to coordinate rescue ops. Do not, repeat, do not target for transport anyone on frequency 211 point 118 barring special request."
[Ark Royal]
Lt. j.g. Arnold Battan frowned as his scans picked up the faintest of signals as he scanned for escape pods and emergency signals. It was faint, but it was definitely Starfleet. He adjusted their sensors and honed in on it, using the snatches of the message to echo and amplify the signal from their end.
"Ark Royal, Ark Royal, this is Akagi, Ensign Escobar speaking, Commander Avali wants me to coordinate rescue ops. Do not, repeat, do not target for transport anyone on frequency 211 point 118 barring special request."
Arnold scrambled to boost the signal again before he lost the connection. "Commander Avali, this is Lieutenant Battan of the Ark Royal. We've got your signal. Are you still with us?"
"I'm here, Ark Royal," Avali spoke out loud, "The main power conduit has been cut and the warp core ejection system is not functioning. You have... Just over two minutes to get everyone else out before I have to take Akagi out and away so we don't blow in the middle of the squadron. Confirm you can snag everyone but me by then?"
"Confirmed," Battan said, then looked at his own Captain, unsure how else to respond to someone's final question.
“Good, get them out and I’ll get this girl out of the way.” Jessica Avali paused for a moment, “Then I’ll see you in Valhalla, Lieutenant Battan. Turning you over to Escobar to coordinate.”
"We'll start beaming over as many as we can. Everyone should standby for transport," The voice of Maple from the Ark Royal replied. "I am hereby ordering you all to abandon ship."
“Main power is down, comms are on local reach only, anyone who can get to escape pods are probably already doing it. All we’re doing is buying time, ma’am. As my engineers complete their tasks, get them off.” Jessica’s voice hardened, “The autopilot is down, I have to pilot her out manually from down here.”
[USS Ark Royal]
"Status of the Herald weapons?" Maple asked.
"Weapons are powering back up," the CSO reported. "Recommending we take evasive action within the next three minutes."
"Helm. Duck us under the Akagi, on the adjacent side facing the starbase. As much as I hate it, we can use the wreck of the Akagi for cover. Once we're in position, lower shields and use all of our transporters, even the cargo ones and start beaming." Maple ordered.
James swallowed nervously, but didn't hesitate as he dropped their z-axis, pushing the engines. They were a starship, not a shuttlecraft; precision was essential, but not always possible, especially with the Akagi no longer under control. He watched the ruined ship's hull dance dangerously close, but kept them underneath, wearing the ship like a hat.
"Coordinating with transporter rooms one and two," Battan said. "Beaming off all people from non-essential areas. Tractoring in escape pods."
"Transporter rooms three and four are reporting they're clearing the pods," James said from the helm as he kept the ship twisting underneath.
[USS Tokyo Bridge]
Thomas finally made his way up to his knees. His eyes blurred, liquid flowed from his forehead, and he could see several bodies lying motionless on the floor.
It was at the moment, the sound echoed in the room. As expected, they were being boarded. "All hands ready weapons... we have intruders." Reaching over he grabbed his that was next to his seat, as he heard weapons fire come from one of the back consoles, along with a blood curdling scream. The Heralds had used the opportunity to beam over to the Tokyo.
Jasad shook off the ringing in his ears as the sound of weapons fire and a scream registered through the haze. The bastards boarded my ship.... he thought through an angered haze. He forced himself upright, vision still swimming, and saw them — two Heralds near the aft stations, their staffs raised, cutting down anything that moved.
He reached for the phaser at his hip on pure instinct, training overriding the lightheadedness, and brought it up just as the nearest Herald's head turned toward him. He fired — a clean shot that should have dropped it — but the creature was faster as it brought its staff sweeping up and across, knocking the phaser clean out of Jasad's grip. The weapon clattered somewhere behind the helm console, lost in the smoke.
The Cardassian didn't have time to look for it. Instead, his hand dropped to his boot on reflex, fingers closing around the hilt of the dagger he kept there — a habit from a lifetime ago. The Herald lunged at him, but Lieutenant Yuvek met it halfway, driving the blade up and into the side of its throat with everything his body had left.
Jasad felt it go in — felt the resistance give way as it found the artery, felt the pulse of whatever the Herald's considered blood across his hand and down the front of his tunic in time with the creature's collapsing heartbeat. The Herald's grip went slack on its weapon, its body crumpling against him before he shoved it off and let it fall.
[USS Tokyo Corridors]
Pryana had been near her quarters when she heard about the boarders. Retrieving her native weapons from her quarters, she let her well honed instincts takeover.
A pair of Heralds entered the corridor. The SerNumi security officer kept to the shadows created by the Tokyo's emergency lighting.
As they came into range, she sprang forth burying one of her bladed weapons into the throat of the nearest opponent. When the other Herald tried to fire at her, she used the now dead Herald as a shield. The body absorbing the blast.
Dropping the body, in one smooth movement, she caught the Herald's staff and used it to dispatch its comrade.
All though this brief encounter, her face was blank, her eyes bereft of mercy or compassion. She was an instrument of Death.
