Location: Various
Timeline: March 18th, 2397

[Iconian Starbase]

Heralds swarmed the room, each carrying one of the iconic staff weapons. They seemed to communicate in a strange language as they unleashed volley after volley of weapons fire at the Starfleet Away Teams covered location.

"Taking cover," Takina announced as she ushered Devon behind one of the pillars. "I'm counting at least 15 of them with more likely on the way; if we wanna get out of here, Commander, now's gonna be the time."

"Tokyo to Away Team. Respond. Requesting status." A voice called through the comm badges.

Takina reached up and tapped her badge. "This is Lieutenant Inoue; the charges have been planted, but our presence on the station has been compromised and we're currently pinned down; requesting emergency extraction, over."

[USS Tokyo Deck Five, Section 3 Gamma]

Alexis had hijacked a Lieutenant that was on his way back to engineering as she and the other Petty Officer raced towards where the plasma leak had sprung, the glare of the forcefield that had it contained stopping them short. "Sir, if you'll vent the buildup through the tertiary conduits, we can get a look at what we're facing."

Lieutenant Mil nodded and began to work the suction controls as the residual plasma swirling in the air began to dissipate and swirl. Alexis beckoned the other Petty Officer over and pointed over to a console, under which was where the plasma had breached, "Grab a portable suction pump from junction five-two-six, it's just residual drift now but let's play it safe." The Petty Officer ran off to get the gear and returned in just over a pair of minutes, the air having cleared aside from a wisp coming from the breach point.

"Lowering the field, resetting it up behind us." The Trill officer remarked and accepted the mask that the petty officer handed him, Alexis already having donned hers. Her hand was on the back of PO Oxland to help guide him and to be able to yank him back as needed. The suction pump activated and they slowly advanced on the breach until they were up next to it and Oxland focused on containing the wisp that still emanated as Alexis and Tuhjer investigated the leak. "Shouldn't take but a minute." He said.

"I've got a patch here, sir." Alexis stated, "If you'll let me?" He nodded and she settled herself in front of the leak, pulling on a set of heavy duty gloves as she sealed the breach with the patch. Later on, they could fully drain the conduits and put in a more permanent repair, when there was enough time. It took three minutes of sealing the patch into place and the pump withdrew, no wisp of leakage anymore. The three engineers backed away and set up an interim field that blocked Tuhjer off to one side and the two petty officers to the other. Alexis turned to the panel and made a selection, rerouting the plasma back through the conduit slowly, nodding as the pressure began to ramp up, "All right, we're up and-"

From the opposite side, a new explosion occurred and Oxland and Alexis watched in horror as a plasma jet enveloped Tuhjer Mil in the span of a heartbeat, not even giving him time to scream before he was just gone. Alexis's hands cut the plasma feed moments after the new forcefields snapped up, but it was already too late. She cleared the new rupture that had formed and scanned it with the tricorder and tapped her combadge. "Lieutenant Addams, we can't fix this short of some intensive repairs. I'm marking this corridor off-limiits for the time being, three sections deep either side, there's a crack in the plasma conduit that's just too big to repair unless we desperately need it.. We lost Lieutenant Mil to the new rupture, sir."

There was a long pause at the other end of the line, and then Zach's voice, controlled and restrained. "Understood, Petty Officer," he said. "I will reroute power and signal for evacuation. Please vacate the area immediately and return to Engineering."

"On my way, sir." Alexis pointed back the way they came, "Pax, Tuhjer Mil, Pax." She took off at a jog towards engineering.

[Battle zone]

The Iconian Starbase had absorbed every impact that the six Armitage Class starships and their Starfighters had thrown at it. Its small weapons platforms were still firing small pulses of purple Anti-Proton energy beams and pulses. However suddenly, they stopped and seemed to disappear back into the hull of the starbase.

Across the surface of the immense Iconian installation, sections of the hull began to shift. Massive armored plates slid aside in perfect synchronization, exposing structures buried deep within the station. What emerged resembled enormous phaser arrays, each one dwarfing the weapons mounted on any starship.

Purple arcs danced between the exposed emitters. The energy intensified with each passing second until entire sections of the station were wreathed in crackling violet lightning. Without warning, the gathered energy converged. A colossal lance of violet light erupted from the arrays, carving a path across the battlefield.

Fighters vanished the instant the beam touched them. One moment they were maneuvering through the battle, the next they were reduced to expanding spheres of fire and debris, littering the area.

The beam continued its relentless sweep across the battlefield, before finally coming into contact with the USS Akagi. There it stopped as the ships shields struggled to repel its energy.

Then they collapsed.

The violet beam punched directly into the saucer section. A massive explosion erupted where the bridge module had once stood.

When the fireball dissipated, a gaping wound remained. The entire bridge module had been carved away, exposing twisted decks deep within the ship's interior.

Atmosphere, debris, and crew were hurled into space through the huge breach. Emergency forcefields could be spotted shimmering attempting to seal the breach, but then failing as the ship began to list and roll to starboard. Its nacelles flickered along with the ships lights as its power began to fail.

Then it was nothing but silence, a dead wreck in the middle of the battlefield.

[Fighters]

"Oh, that doesn't look good..." Nozomi muttered as she witnessed the explosion from afar. "Which one was that?"

Fubuki gasped in horror at the sheer amount of damage that the Akagi took in one hit. She checked her instruments. When she heard Nozomi's question she quickly opened a channel to every starfighter. "Snowflake to all Starfighters, the Akagi has been hit. It seems like significant damage. Wings Gamma and Beta, break off your attack and cover the other ships attempting to rescue." she ordered.

[USS Ark Royal]

"Direct hit to the Akagi, Ma'am," the Ark Royal's Chief of Security reported. "Heavy damages reported; life support is holding, but likely to fail within the next five minutes."

"Bring us about!" Maple said without hesitation. "I want all transporters ready to go. Let's grab as many of the Akagi's remaining crew as we can!" she ordered.

Lieutenant James Erickson shoved his mop of blonde hair out of his eyes and leaned into his console as he swung the rear of the ship, turning them 180 degrees so hard he could feel the inertial dampeners trying to keep up. "Aye, Ma'am, coming about!"

As the ship finished its swing, he pushed them forward at full impulse, twisting them around to match the Akagi's pitch as it spiralled, keeping them synchronized.

"We're within transporter range, Ma'am," Lieutenant Battan said from Ops. "Transporter rooms report ready."

"Set the transporters to wide beam angle, and grab as many people as you can." Maple ordered. "Divert emergency power to the transporters and ablative armour. We need to lower our shields, and we'll be no use to anyone crippled ourselves."

"Lowering shields," the Chief of Security announced.

[USS Graf Zeppelin Bridge]

Captain Loid Forger watched in silent horror as the wreck of the Akagi tumbled across the main viewer. His jaw was set tight as he knew that he had to keep a strong appearance before the rest of the crew. The Graf Zeppelin was barely six weeks out of dry dock — half her systems still carried that faint new-ship smell, untested under anything heavier than drills.

"Helmuth," he said, low, to his Executive Officer, "tell me ze ablative armor is online and holding. I do not want to find out the hard way zat dock workers missed something." he said through clenched teeth.

Commander Helmuth Reinholt didn't look up from his console, fingers already moving. "Armor still holding at eighty-six percent, Captain. Whatever zat beam was, we have not been in its path. Yet."

"Zen we make sure we are never in its path." Loid straightened in his chair, eyes shifting hard between his tactical display and the main viewer on the gap where the Akagi's bridge module used to be.

"Mr. Threll, increase our distance from zat. . .zat. . .Was zum Teufel das Ding auch ist! (whatever the hell that thing is), keep us oblique to its firing arc at all times. I don't care how good our shields test on paper — I am not interested in being ze next demonstration."

"Aye, Captain," the helmsman replied, already adjusting.

[USS Akagi]

The transmission was weak, clearly not from the comms of the ship, but a jerry rigged one made in haste, "Any ship, any ship, this is Lieutenant Commander Jessica Avali, Chief Engineer of the Akagi. If anyone is listening, dear God I hope someone is listening. We have lost main power, antimatter containment is going to fail in... Five minutes and eighteen seconds. GET THOSE GENERATORS HOOKED UP, ON THE DOUBLE!" The voice screamed at something not on the comm.

"Any ship, any ship, this is Commander Avali, Engineer on the Akagi. We need assistance abandoning ship. I believe I can restore warp capability and jump the ship out of here to avoid collateral damage, but we need to evacuate as many as possible. If I don't get a response in three minutes, I'm going to jump to warp." The voice sounded weary, but resigned, the sound of work in the background being done, "Any ship, any ship, this is Commander Avali..."

[Runabout - USS Kiowa]

From their vantage point, Markus and everyone in the runabout watched in horror as the Akagi was hit and started to drift. Then, when the distress call came in, Markus reacted instantly. Slapping the comm panel, he spoke aloud. "Akagi, this is Lieutenant Markus, commanding the runabout Kiowa. We may not have a lot of space, but I'm heading your way to cram as many aboard as we can fit!" He then switched channels to the starfighter frequency. "Speedy, if you wanna tag along, be my guest, but we're heading in now!"

As he was speaking, Markus set a course towards the Akagi. He looked at the Ensign he had relieved. "Man the transporter controls. As soon as we are in range, you lock on to anyone you can and keep bringing them over until we are filled to bursting!"

The young Ensign swallowed the lump that was in his throat, and nodded, suddenly finding his courage again. Straightening up in his seat, he nodded. "Aye, Sir!"

Soren closed the channel immediately, a frustrated look on his face, before shouting. "I'll follow your lead, Speedy." He said, in a mocking tone. "Give me a fucking break." He switched to his private com channel to speak to Srelar. "Change of plans... Again. We backup the runabout and keep them from getting themselves killed."

"And after?" Srelar asked as he repositioned his fighter.

"And after... I will get thrown in the brig for attempted murder." Speedy replied as he began his course to the runabout, easily bypassing it due to their differences in speed.

Srelar followed, matching Soren's course and speed, while keeping in mind to keep Soren from doing anything stupid. Either before or after the mission at hand.

The sleek runabout screamed on full impulse power towards the stricken carrier. As soon as they were in range, the Ensign did as instructed, and started beaming survivors over two at a time.

By the time they had closed to within a few hundred meters, the runabout was full, having beamed over and crammed in twenty-six personnel. There was barely room to breath, but they were out. Then, a few escape pods started to launch, and Markus was able to coral three with his tractor beam, saving fifteen more of the Akagi's crew.

"Alright boys and girls!" Markus called out to his rescuees. "Hold tight, the ride might get a bit bumpy!"

"Gee, and you thought I was a shit pilot..." the Ensign grumbled to himself.

The Runabout, along with the three escape pods it had secured, peeled away from the crippled Akagi, doing the best they could to get as far from the powerful starship, before the warp core exploded.
