2,069 words; about a 10 minute read

Mission: Flight Of The Valkyries
Location: USS Tokyo Transporter Room
Timeline: March 15th, 2397 - 09:00

[Transporter Room 3]

Taiga made her way down to the transporter room of the Tokyo. New orders from Starfleet Command had come through. The Tokyo was finally going to recieve a replacement compliment of Marines. With the war starting to escalate, more firepower was appreciated and it helped put the captains mind at ease.

The transporter room was quiet as per usual.

"Captain." the Transporter operator greeted her. "The transporter operator aboard the Graf Zepplin has confirmed that the Lieutenant Colonel is ready to beam over. Standing by for transport."

Taiga nodded. "Energise."

The familiar swirling blue lights of the transporter, surrounded by the tones made as the mechanism was beginning its function, kicked in. However, there were two figures forming on the pad, not just the one that was expected. As their details formed, they could tell one was a large Klingon male in a Starfleet Marine Uniform. While the other, to their surprise, was a 4 year old girl. She took looked Klingon, but also a little bit of something else.

Ashok looked around from the transporter pad, his head immediately went down toward his daughter. He gave her a slight smile, squeezing her hand gently, before looking back up to the other officers present. His brow raised as his eyes locked on the Captain and her... condition. The large Klingon stepped off the pad, lifting his daughter Ciri into his arms, as looked over to Taiga as his face became more stern.

"Captain Aisaka?" He said in a deep voice, with a hint of hesitation. "Lieutenant Colonel Ashok. Son of Norath of the House of Norath." Ashok looked over to his daughter and added as he looked back to the Captain. "My daughter, Cirilla."

Taiga nodded at the new arrivals. "Yes, I am Captain Aisaka. Welcome aboard the Tokyo Lieutenant Colonel." She looked at the young girl. "And you too Cirilla." she gave the girl a small welcoming smile. "How about we go get acquainted? Are either of you two hungry?"

Ashok looked at Taiga sternly before looking over to the transporter chief. With a firm tone he said "You... Transporter Chief. Please escort my daughter to the Marine deck and locate Marine Deputy Commander."

"Daddy... I want to stay with you." His daughter said softly, looking up to her father.

He knelt down in front of the Ciri, giving her a small smile, as he spoke to her softly. "Ciri? Daddy needs to speak to the Captain and you should check on Hur'q. Your little Targ will be very scared and is going to need you to help him figure out whats going on."

"Okay, daddy." Ciri replied softly, looking down for a minute, before returning her gaze to her father. A big smile formed on her as she said. "Can I feed him his favorite rations?"

Ash placed his hand on her head and let out a little chuckle. "Only two."

Little Cirilla clapped her hands and walked over to the transporter chief, taking their hand in hers, before going with them to the transporter room doors. "Let's go... Hur'q gets very grumpy when he isn't eating."

Tha transporter chief nodded and then made his way towards the door. He ensured that the young girl was following him before he led her out into the corridor.

When the chief and his daughter left the room, Ashok look fiercely at the Captain. Locking his eyes on her like a predator selecting its prey. "Is this some kind of joke?"

Taiga crossed her arms. "Is what a joke?"

"I was informed that this ship, as well as the many others that escorted me and my Marines to this ship, was preparing a dangerous attack against a powerful enemy." Ashok crossed his arms over his chest, puffing out his chest slightly, as he bared his teeth. "An enemy that has the capability to wipe out this entire armada if given the chance to prepare." He took a step forward and gestured to her, moving his hand up and down, before adding in a low voice. "Instead... I find... this. A pregnant Captain. What qu'vatlh in Starfleet allowed this to happen?!!"

She blinked a few times in surprise. "I was unaware that my current condition affected my ability to command this ship." She replied simply. "Yes, I have trouble here and there, but I am still fully capable of commanding this vessel. Plus, if you haven't noticed we're at war. I was pregnant before this started, and I am doing my bit to keep others safe."

"At the risk of your own child!" Ashok shouted abruptly, enough to where it could be heard through the transporter room walls. "Your first and primary concern shoulder always be your child. You are no longer permitted to to put yourself in danger because you..." He said sternly as he pointed to her, taking a step toward her. "Are no longer just a Captain, but someones Mother. You need to decide which of those is more important! And if you choose the first, you are not only unworthy to carry that rank, but to be the caretaker to another life."

Taiga was utterly stunned. She stared blankly at the Klingon in front of her as she processed what he had said. "I never thought about it that way." she said in response. "But, we're in far too deep now. I can't just abandon the ship and crew. It'll make me look like a coward if I leave now." Her eyes narrowed at him slightly. "You say that this is dangerous and it is, so why is your daughter here? I wasn't even informed that you were bringing a child with you."

"No, Captain. It will make you look like someone who wants to see this child live long enough to see the world her mother is trying to make better." Ash countered quickly. He crossed his arms again, looking down for a moment as he took in s a deep breath, before raising his head to lock eyes with her once again. "I've made plans to get Cirilla off this ship and far away from here, but being concerned for her safety doesn't make me a coward. It makes me her father." He took a deep breath before adding. "My daughters heritage drew some concerns and began to cause problems for my House. I made the decision to leave with her. Do not mistake my decision as arrogance, Captain. I know I am putting myself in harms way, but that is only because, I want to ensure she has a chance to live the life she was meant to have. By staying here, putting you little one in danger, you are risking her future and robbing her of a life she could have because you decided to put you both in danger. You are no longer thinking for yourself. You are thinking for your baby as well. Until the child comes out of your womb and has the chance to scream to the heavens that they have arrived in this world, you must do everything it takes to make sure that happens. Even if it means pulling away from a fight and allowing others to raise up arms for you."

Taiga looked away for a brief second. "Regardless. I'm here now, and I'm still your captain." she said. "How about we stop discussing what's currently living rent free inside my belly, and get back to business?" she said simply. "I will take what you have said into consideration however. But, we still have a job to do here."

"Then I will not be sticking around." Ashok said firmly as he stepped away. "The Marines I serve with have prepared for battle. They have prepared themselves for death and are willing to die to ensure the safety of the Federation. They have trained for war... but your child hasn't. The baby is an innocent life and it brings dishonor to a Klingon who knowingly and willingly places a life in danger who hasn't prepared for combat or known the thrill of the first hunt. As a Starfleet Marine I am charged with protecting innocent lives. As a Klingon, I will not dishonor my House by sending an innocent life to death. My Klingon tradition demands it. It is my culture, Captain. It is my way." He turned around and looked at her firmly. "I refuse to participate in this battle while that innocent life is still onboard. You cannot order me. Starfleet cannot force me due to my Klingon tradition." He let out a sigh and added. "I have taken many lives, but I refuse to add that one to the ones I have already taken." He said as he pointed to her stomach.

"You will be sticking around." Taiga said firmly. "I believe that you have orders to transfer to this ship. Those orders do not come from me." She stated. She took a step closer to him. "Whether you like it or not Lieutenant Colonel. You are ordered to transfer to this ship and do your job to the best of your ability. If you want to request a transfer then fine. But we are only a few days away from engaging the enemy. So there may not be time for Starfleet Personnel to process your transfer request." She explained to him, her voice firm. "I understand your concerns, but right now you are the Marine Commander of this ship, and you will act like one."

Ash took a step toward her and firmly stood his ground. It was like he was challenged and, on instinct alone, was required to defend himself. His eyes stared intently at her, never shifting away. It was taking everything he could to hold himself back from reacting like an enraged Klingon would. He allowed a growl to escape his lips before stopping it slowly. He leaned down slowly and whispered. "You need to start acting like a Captain and a Mother who actually wants to see their child survive and step away from this fight. War is a sudden and bloody affair, so there is no way you can promise me, or yourself, that you and that baby will be safe. Can you look me in the eyes and with 100 percent certainty say that nothing will happen to you or that child? If so, then I will gladly die for you, but you need to speak with no hesitation. No second thoughts. With confidence in your heart and fire in your veins. Are you certain you are not going to die and take that life with you in the process?"

"I'm not letting any harm come to this baby." Taiga said firmly. "I fully intend to live through this engagement. And I fully intend for my child to as well. You protect your child Lieutenant Colonel. And I shall protect mine." she looked him directly in the eyes, not breaking contact. "Now, how about we do the whole official coming aboard crap huh?"

The Klingon quickly lunged forward at her, stopping inches from her face, his firm look unwavering as he whispered. "You said that was such little conviction." He slowly leaned back and crossed his arms. "Then you leave me no choice but to send Starfleet Commander a message stating that, this mission, is to be aborted. You, your crew, your medial staff, and Starfleet itself is knowingly and willingly allowing a pregnant Command Officer to lead a full frontal assault and escalating a war with a dangerous enemy that can willingly wipe out, not just this armada, but the Federation itself. Your inability to step away is not only tainting your career but the reputation of Starfleet and the Federation for allowing this to happen." Ashok let out a scoff and walked passed her to the doors. "I may have placed my career in jeopardy, but you destroyed your own and the Federation's ideals in the process. The same ideals that built Starfleet and give us purpose have now been shattered because of your overconfidence and arrogance. Congratulations, Captain. You lost this fight before it even started."
