Mission: Preserving The Past
Location: Tokyo & Anerind
Timeline: January 26, 2397

[Space - Amerind System]

[Squad Alpha]

Five Valkyrie Starfighters banked as they came around one of the gas giants in the Amerind system. They were scouting the system on the look out for any signs of Herald ships. Lead by their acting CAG, 'Squad Alpha' comprised of Snowflake, Blank, Highlander, and the Twins.

"Snowflake to Squad Alpha. How's your ship holding up? It's been a while since we had an extended flight." Fubuki's voice came through the speakers in their helmets.

=A=It's like you don't even know me,=A= the pilot known as "Blank" cynically retorted.

"Easy there Blank. It's just a status call." Snowflake replied. "And watch your flight angle, you're out of formation by one point three meters to port." She added with a smirk.

=A=Yeah yeah yeah...=A= Blank grumbled as he repositioned his craft accordingly.

"Twin 2 here, holding up good my end." Rin replied as she gripped her sticks.

"And Twin 1, all good my end too." Len added.

=A=Highlander reporting; all systems green across the board,=A= Came Lynette's voice.

"Good. Keep in formation. Set course for that moon in visual range. We'll do a flyby round it's equator and take a look behind. It seems to be blocking sensors, probably something to do with its composition." Snowflake replied. "Move in tight, arrow formation."

"Arrow formation aye," Twins 1 and 2 responded in unison.

=A=Affirmative,=A= Lynette replied as her craft maneuvered into position.

[Squad Beta]

Meanwhile another set of Starfighters were zooming over a large asteroid belt. Comprised of Leader Gemini, Twin-Tails, Desert Eagle, Ingelbard and Thompson.

"Gemini, this is twin-tails. I'm getting a strange sensor blip on my port sensor." Silica reported. She tapped on her screen to try and identify the strange blip. "Are you getting this too? It could be a misaligned sensor or a misreading?" She asked.

=A=Nope, I'm definitely getting it too,=A= Nozomi reported. =A=All units, please confirm.=A=

=A=Can confirm,=A= Hanna responded. =A=Anomaly detected at bearing 276, mark 35 from our current heading; distance is approximately 14 light years and closing; at the speed its moving, its definitely not natural.=A=

=A=I see it too=A= Aika reported. =A=Movement pattern is evasive but generally on a course toward this system.=A=

=A=That thing’s going scary fast, Leader,=A= added Vyse. =A=Beyond our capabilities, definitely.=A=

=A=Alright, let's take a moment to huddle,=A= Nozomi suggested. =A=What do we think the odds are of this anomaly being Iconian in nature?=A=

Silica pondered. "It could be. But we wouldn't know until it gets much closer," she replied as she guided her ship closer to join the 'huddle' formation.

[USS Tokyo]

Ryuuji stood in the middle of the Tactical Operations Center watching the holographic star map of the system that hovered over the center plotting table. The Tokyo was orbiting over Amerind whilst three squadrons of Starfighters were out scouting the system.

He also had a direct line straight to the Tokyo's helm so that all parties could co-ordinate between Starfighters and helm control.

"Commander?" one of the Comm officers spoke up.

Ryuuji looked up. "Yes?"

"Just got a report in from Beta Squadron," the Comm Officer explained. "They're observing a spatial anomaly due west of their current heading; Distance is reported to be at least 14 light years and closing, while movement patterns are described as "erratic" and "unnatural"; based on the fact that no major trade organization passes through this region, they believe the anomaly to be Iconian. Squadron recommends going to yellow alert until further investigations can be carried out; would also strongly recommend preparing the flight deck to receive fighters in the event that an Iconian presence is confirmed to be in or approaching the Amerind system."

He looked up at Ryuuji. "Your orders, Sir?"

Ryuuji tapped his comm badge. "Bridge this is the TIC. Starfighters report anomalous reading approximately fourteen lightyears and closing. Unable to confirm identification. Recommended yellow alert."

"Acknowledged TIC," Taiga's voice replied. The ships status then turned to yellow alert the warning beacons turning to yellow.

"Contact the starfighters. Have them keep a close eye on that reading. If it comes closer advise intercept and investigate. Hopefully it's not Iconian." Ryuuji ordered. "I don't see why they would use warp drive over their gateways..."

"Aye, Sir," the Conn Officer replied before turning back to face the monitor. =A=Beta Squadron, this is TIC; continue to monitor the anomaly, and if at any point it enters the system, have your fighters intercept and investigate.=A=

=A=Roger that, TIC,=A= came Nozomi's response. =A=Beta Squadron, over and out.=A=

[Two Hours Later]

[Alpha Squadron]

Fubuki scowled as she studied the sensor readings on her screens. The incoming ships had come to a halt and were now holding position at eleven lightyears. They were basically in the next system, but seemed to be holding on the very edge. She didn't like it one bit.

"Snowflake to Tokyo. Confirm my readings, those incoming signatures holding at eleven lightyears out?"

"Confirned Snowflake." Ryuuji's voice replied. "We are also detecting Anti-Protons within their vicinity. We believe they are likely Iconian in nature. Pull your squadrons back to Tokyo and prepare for defensive combat."

"Acknowledged Tokyo. Snowflake Out."

She reached forward and opened a channel to the ither starfighters. "Snowflake to all pilots. Incoming Signatures presumed to be Iconian. Tokyo has ordered us back to prepare for defensive combat. Return to Tokyo immediately. I repeat, return to Tokyo immediately."

=A=Copy that, Snowflake,=A= Nozomi replied. =A=Has the Kanna been alerted to the situation?=A=

"Unknown. I presume so." Fubuki replied over the comms.

Both squadrons pulled away from their charted course and began to speed back towards the Tokyo.

To be continued...
