Mission: Kintsugi

Timeline: April 4th, 2397

The door slid open with a bang. The entire house seemed to shake from the impact of it smacking into the door frame. "Ryu! Taiga!" a familiar female voice called loudly, it echoed throughout the house as a woman rushed into the building. She kicked off her shoes and began rushing down the small hallway.

The next door opened, once again with a bang. There she stood. A woman in her early fifties at most. Her long wavy hair was dyed blonde, and her brown eyes looked around the room. For someone of her age, she still looked beautiful and wore a slender casual dress. Standing at five foot six, she was still rather small, yet still taller than Taiga.

She had a simply necklace around her neck, which was matched with similar styled earrings. A dusting of makeup on her face was light, but highlighted her features and eyes, it was complimented by dark cherry lipstick. The most noticeable thing about this woman was one thing that Taiga was always envious of, her greatest assets that she had used for years as a hostess.

Taiga looked up from the table, not entirely surprised at the sudden entrance of this woman. She simply picked up her teacup and took a sip before giving the woman a smile.

And why wasn't Taiga, angry? Confused? Annoyed? This beautiful older woman had just burst into her house like she owned it. Shouted out their names at the top of her voice and practically scrambled to get to their little family. That became quite evident when Ryuuji spoke, his head peeking out from the kitchen.

"Mum, do you always have to just barge in at warp speed?"

He didn't get a reaction. With swiftness in her step, she rushed Ryuuji. Taiga watched as she pulled him into the tightest hug that she had ever seen.

"Oh Ryu! I've missed you so much! You hardly ever call your little old mother any more. I know you have Taiga, but you had your wedding without me too!" Her voice was rather high pitched and at times whiny. It was obvious to anyone that this woman, loved attention.

This was the one person who Ryuuji and Taiga valued the most in the universe apart from Riko. Yasuko Takasu, the mother of Ryuuji and the one who had taken in Taiga and added her to part of the family many years ago.

She released Ryuuji and instantly dashed over to Taiga. Without warning Taiga was receiving the same treatment. She sat there allowing Yasuko to hug her tightly. A smile spread across Taiga's face, it had been many years since she had had this feeling.

"Its nice to see you Yasuko..."

"Oh its always nice to see you too Taiga! My little Taiga! All the way from outer space." Yasuko grinned as she stroked Taiga's hair. "But, there's a new member of our family right?"

She released Taiga and looked over towards the small Moses basket that was sat on the other side of the table. Yasuko looked at Taiga. Her eyes clearly showed that she was seeking permission to look into the little woven basket and whom was inside.

Taiga let out a sigh. "Sure. Go ahead. Go ahead and say hi."

Yasuko wasted no time. She quickly shuffled over and peered into the basket. Amongst the blankets Riko was snoozing peacefully. Yasuko's entire form changed instantly. Her usual boisterous, loud and over the top personality was instantly switched. Now she was delicate, quiet and gentle. She slowly reached into the basket and pulled Riko out.

With expert precision she held little Riko in her arms. She ensured that her head was supported and that she was being delicate and gentle with her. This was a woman who had not just been a mother before, but had the experience of raising her own child. That child now had his own, and her maternal instincts had come back to her like it was only yesterday.

"Hello there little one." she whispered gentle. She looked over at Taiga, and then at Ryuuji who had entered the room from the kitchen sporting a light pink apron. She ran a finger over the little girls forehead, brushing the small swirl of brown hair.

Slowly Riko opened her eyes and looked up at her grandmother for the first time. Ryuuji took the position next to Yasuko and placed a cup of tea in front of her. "Mum. I want you to meet Riko. Our daughter, and your granddaughter."

"Riko..." Yasuko said as tears of joy formed in her eyes. She slowly looked up at Taiga. "She has your eyes."

"I've noticed." Taiga chuckled. "I'm sorry that you couldn't make it to the wedding. It was on Risa and I know you get space sickness, it wasn't intentional."

Yasuko gave her a soft look as she returned to look down at Riko again. She held out a finger, which Riko held tightly. "That's ok. I'm just glad you're... all three of you are safe and back home." She told her. Riko seemed interested in her finger and held it with a tight grip as if it was something previous to her.

"Ryu, she's got your strength!" Yasuko joked.

"She's only a few weeks old at most. I doubt she's that strong." Ryuuji replied as he relaxed a little.

Yasuko smirked at her son. "You know, you were once this small. But I never imagined that I would be holding such a delicate little one so soon." she pulled her finger away, and Riko let out a sob, it soon turned into a cry. Gently, Yasuko rocked her in her arms. "There there Riko. Don't cry. Grandma is here now."

Riko calmed as she was rocked. Taiga opened her eyes in disbelief. "Yasuko!" she said as she lunged forward slightly.

Yasuko held a finger to her lips, shushing Taiga on the spot. "Shh! Riko's just nodded off."

Taiga blinked again. "Yasuko... Please show me. How you did that!"

"How did what?" Yasuko asked as she continued to rock Riko gently in her arms. "Oh, you mean. This?" she indicated to Riko with her eyes. She gave Taiga a smirk and then looked up at the ceiling for a moment as if in thought. "Lets just call it experience. I spent many hours rocking Ryu to sleep when he was a baby. He was such a fussy little baby! Always wanting to be fed, always wanting to be close to his mama."

"Mum..." Ryuuji groaned as he placed a hand on his forehead.

"Oh, don't be like that Ryu. Look how you turned out. My little baby boy has become a big strong man. With a family of his own, and the kindest and most gentle heart he always had since he was so very little." Yasuko beamed proudly as she looked at her son whom towered above her even when sitting.

The look of amusement across Taiga's face was as evident as the beam of a lighthouse on a dark clear night. She was enjoying the interaction of Yasuko being by their side again. It had been so many years since she had felt this... safe and so loved by anyone else apart from Ryuuji.

"Anyways. Are you staying for dinner?" Ryuuji asked. "I'm making Sukiyaki tonight. Although, Riko has milk from Taiga..."

Yasuko looked down at Riko, she kept her eyes fixed on the little baby girl as she spoke. "I'd love to stay for dinner. I've missed your cooking. But, more importunately I want to spend this evening with my family."
