Mission:
Flight Of The Valkyries
Location: Various
Timeline: March 18th, 2397
[USS Tokyo Bridge]
Sitting in the centre seat, Thomas couldn't help but think how the Captain should be here, this was her mission. Now she was fighting for her life. However he wasn't going to let that distract him from the mission at hand. It was his now. Six of the largest, and most powerful ships, were at his disposal. "Is everyone ready Lt."
Lieutenant Yuvek looked up from his console, where a small communication window showed the face of a young officer - Chief Helmsman Ensign Voras of the USS Akagi - features creased with uncertainty.
"Almost, sir," Lieutenant Yuvek responded as he turned back to his screen.
"Ensign Voras, adjust your approach vector by two degrees starboard," Lieutenant Yuvek said firmly, his tone leaving no room for debate. "Your current heading will drift you into the Ark Royal's formation envelope during the coordinated turn."
The other Helm officer's voice came through hesitantly. "Sir, I've reviewed the calculations and the current vector should be—"
"How long have you been flying the Akagi?" Lieutenant Yuvek interrupted.
"8 months, sir."
"I've been flying this Armitage-class carrier for over two years years," Lieutenant Yuvek responded, his voice calm but unyielding. "Your mass distribution calculations don't account for the Graf Zeppelin's wake turbulence or how your impulse engines will respond under combat load. Two degrees starboard. Adjust now."
"But if that throws off our weapons approach angle—"
"It won't," The Cardassian cut him off again. "We don't have time to debate fleet maneuvering theory, Ensign. Make the correction."
There was a brief pause. "Understood, sir. Adjusting to two degrees starboard." The junior officer said in compliance.
Lieutenant Yuvek closed the channel and turned back to Commander Johnson, his expression showing controlled annoyance.
"All ships report ready, sir," he said as he rolled his shoulders to relieve the accumulated stress in them. "I've synchronized navigation protocols with the carriers. We're ready to depart on your orders."
Taking a glance of all the readouts from his console. Tactical information, helm, sciences, medical, not just from his ship but the others as well. "Lt Contact the other ships, lets get the show started shall we."
Lieutenant Yuvek opened a fleet-wide channel directing the accompanying ships to engage formation delta-seven and to prepare for combat drop at the system edge. The enormity of the mission settled over him - finally, a coordinated strike force instead of scattered ships fleeing for their lives. Starfleet was going to make the Heralds fear for their lives for once.
"Warp drive engaged," he announced. "All six carriers maintaining formation." He called out.
[One Hour Later]
The six Armitage Class ships dropped out of warp. The Tokyo was leading. The Armitage dropped out behind, followed by the Graf Zepplin, Akagi, Broadsword and finally the Ark Royal bringing up the rear.
"Contact all ships, deploy the fighters." Thomas replied as he sat up straight. He knew that out of all those fighters, a lot of them would likely not make it back. It was something they had signed up for, and knew the risk. But it didn't make it easier. "Good luck guys." He let out.
"Yes Captain. I'm sending the launch command to all ships." The cool emotionless voice of Chief Roromiya replied.
[Flight Deck]
Fubuki took a long deep breath as she gripped her sticks tightly. This was it, this was the time she had to co-ordinate three hundred and sixty Starfighters. Their plan was simple, to go ahead of the main ships. Clearing a path through the dense asteroid field that surrounded the Herald Starbase.
She was assigned to wave one, to scout and tag targets. As well as help break up some of the larger asteroids. She knew it was going to be risky, and it was dangerous. One wrong move and the huge chunks of rock and debris would crush their fighters like empty tin cans. "Snowflake here. Launching!"
Her starfighter was catapulted off the deck as her engines roared into life. "Successful launch." She reported back. "En route to formation rendevous co-ordinates."
lining up behind her was Nozomi, performing one last pre-flight inspection as the catapult was pulled back into position.
"Alright, everyone, so just a recap of how this is all going to go down; once we form up with Kuchikukan, we're going to split into 3 waves. Miyafuji, you'll be in Kuchikukan's wave up front; your duty will consist of clearing a path so the main ships can get through."
"No pressure or anything..." Lynette sighed.
"After that, Inglebard's wave will be responsible for clearing up the smaller hazards that Kuchikukan's wave missed; lastly, my wave will be taking up the rear and making sure that the pathway is wide enough for the main ships to pass through. Chikura, since you're still getting accustomed to the 1A firmware, I want you to stay within my line of sight, at least until you're more comfortable with the controls."
"Understood." Chikura replied simply as she checked her controls.
“Understood,” echoed Vyse.
"And last but not least- make sure you don't deviate from your assigned wave! This goes for you especially, Kobayashi!"
"You fuckin' killjoy," Sora could be heard grumbling.
"Right, I think that covers everything; see you guys out there," Nozomi nodded as she sat back and gripped her flight sticks. "Gemini to TIC; ready to launch, over."
"Gemini. You are clear to launch." Roromiya's voice replied.
Nozomi smirked. "Yippie-Ki-Yay..."
And with that, her crafted rocketed off the deck and out into the depths of space.
"Successful launch," she reported. "En route to formation rendevous co-ordinates; wish me luck."
Grace followed the ground guide as she was guided to the catapults and exhaled deeply, both reveling in the new call sign she'd been given a couple days before and the fact that when she'd walked around her fighter, it hadn't been half-armed with the reconnaissance suite. That made her feel nearly naked when she'd settled into the cockpit and snugged herself down, because the weapons panel took up more space without the sensor console requiring the area.
The handoff to the launch team went smoothly and she activated her HUD as the final preflight checks were handled by rote, "Starburst, after launch, form up on my wing, we'll go in with Mosh and Pickle." She'd been introduced to her flightmates a few days ago, but Starburst, Ensign Josh Valgentz, was even younger than her and she felt like a big sister for once." Then she settled her head back into the headrest and rested her hands on the controls, "Sabre, ready for launch."
The voice came back almost immediately, the smooth baritone already going through the motions, "Happy Hunting, Sabre, cleared for launch in three, two..."
The rush of the catapult and the roughly three percent reduction on the inertial dampers pushed Grace back into her seat and the stars rushed out to meet her as she immediately broke to the right and down after clearing the flight deck, heading towards the marshaling point for the first wave of craft.
Anzhelina sat in her fighter going over the preflight checks. She'd spent a few years as helmsman, but the fighter felt like home.
Briefly closing her eyes, she made a prayer to any gods that may be listening. Opening them again she activated comms. "Seraphina, ready for launch." She said, her tone even, despite her growing excitement.
"Bozhe, dopomozhy meni (God help Me)." She said as she received permission to launch, the engines powered up and she was launched into space.
Following Sabre and Seraphina out was their wingmate Arcadia, having gone through the same checks and preparations. Within moments they were in formation, ready to rock.
[Bridge]
Lieutenant Yuvek maintained his position at the helm, his console displaying the tactical overlay of all six carriers as their fighter complements began launching in coordinated sequence.
"Tokyo's fighters away and forming up," he reported, watching the first wave clear their launch envelope. "Switching to fleet-wide fighter coordination display."
His screen shifted to show the broader picture - the Armitage launching its squadrons, followed by the Graf Zeppelin's fighters streaming out in tight formation. The Akagi's launch pattern showed the slight hesitation he'd expected from Ensign Voras, but the younger helmsman was compensating adequately.
"Broadsword fighters launching now," he announced, tracking their departure vectors. "Ark Royal beginning launch sequence. All carriers maintaining formation delta-seven."
The tactical display filled with fighter icons as three hundred and sixty craft poured out from the six carriers like a coordinated swarm.
With the chief gone, Connor stood at tactical once again, the main job would go to the fighters this day. Watching the fighters make their way, he knew a lot would not be coming back. Considering everything they have already been through. "Tactical systems are at the ready Commander."
Thomas nodded, "Red alert, weapons at the ready. Medical, engineering prepare for their counter measures. Theres no way they don't see us."
"Maintaining formation delta-seven," Lieutenant Yuvek reported, making micro-adjustments to keep the Tokyo positioned precisely where she needed to be. "All carriers holding station at system edge. Ready to begin approach once the fighters clear our corridor." He pulled up the navigational data for their planned route through the asteroid field - the narrow corridor the fighters would be blasting open for them. Two kilometers wide. Six massive carriers. While under fire.
"Fleet-wide combat protocols activated," he announced. "Standing by for approach order once fighters engage the asteroid field." The Helmsman reported.
"No time like the present Lt." Thomas replied as he paused a moment. "Lt open coms to all fighters and ships.
Connor looked at the Commander puzzled, "Aye sir. Channel open."
"This is Commander Johnson, I want you all to know that what we do here today, hopefully brings things to our favour. We all know the risks when we join starfleet, moments like these, turning points that can either put the galaxy at greater risk, or bring it deeper into peril. That said, lets give them hell. We have lost to many in this war. Its time to push back." He turned to the Lt at helm. "Lets start the approach Lt."
"Acknowledged, Commander," Yuvek replied, his voice steady despite the enormity of what they were about to do. "Beginning approach sequence." Lieutenant Yuvek said as he opened the fleet coordination channel. "All ships, this is Tokyo actual. Initiating approach to assault corridor. Formation delta-seven, maintain two-kilometer spacing. Execute on my mark." He stated firmly, trying his best to hide the tension in his voice.
His fingers flew across the navigation controls, plotting the precise vector that would take all six carriers toward the asteroid field in perfect formation. The tactical display showed the fighter wings already engaging, their weapons fire beginning to carve through the larger asteroids.
"Mark - all ships, ahead one-quarter impulse," The Helmsman commanded, watching as the six massive carriers began moving forward in unison. The Tokyo responded smoothly to his commands, her engines pushing the half-kilometer of ship and crew toward an enemy-held position. Around them, the other five carriers matched velocity with precision that spoke to weeks of coordination drills.
"Approach speed holding steady," Lieutenant Yuvek reported. "ETA to corridor entrance: four minutes, thirty seconds."
"Maintain speed and course, I want situation reports from all ships before then. Power fluctuations, hiccups in any of their systems I want to know about before this starts." This engagement would require everyone to be at 100%, any deviation from that may require changes in their plan. Even if it is a small change, it needed to be done before it became a problem.
"Aye, sir." Lieutenant Yuvek replied.
"All ships, Tokyo actual - status reports on propulsion, tactical, and defensive systems. Report any anomalies immediately." The Helmsman broadcasted to the assembled carriers.
His console lit up with incoming data streams from all six carriers as they continued their approach. He scanned the readouts quickly, his eyes tracking power levels, shield integrity, weapon charging status across the fleet.
"Sir" He said as he looked up briefly from his console. "Armitage reports minor fluctuation in starboard shield generator - compensating with backup systems. All other ships report green across the board," he announced. "Formation holding steady. Three minutes to corridor entrance."
"Very well, continue course." Thomas replied sitting back.
