Personality & Traits

General Overview Laila is warm, sociable and attentive, with an excellent memory for names and the details people reveal in conversation. She makes a conscious effort to put nervous cadets and junior officers at ease. Having needed help herself, she dislikes seeing someone made to feel foolish for asking a reasonable question. Professionally, she is organised, discreet and tenacious. She prepares thoroughly, follows up on decisions and recognises when apparently minor administrative problems carry serious consequences. She can politely refuse an insistent senior officer without losing her composure. Her loyalty to Alina includes offering honest advice privately, even when agreement would be easier.

Her rapid advancement has left her sensitive to suggestions that she owes her position to favouritism. Although proud of her achievements, she can overwork herself trying to demonstrate that her rank is deserved.

In her personal life, Laila is a hopeless romantic. She hopes for a lasting partnership and enjoys the prospect of ordinary shared routines as much as grand gestures. Her romantic judgement is less reliable than her professional judgement: she sometimes reads too much into kindness, overlooks genuine interest or remains invested in someone who offers very little in return. She can laugh about a disastrous date with friends, although rejection hurts more than she usually admits.

She has had previous relationships and sexual experience. For Laila, intimacy is something she prefers within a relationship built on affection and trust. She is currently single and has never been married.

Ambitions Laila wants to become an officer whose judgement is trusted independently of the person she serves. She hopes to improve how the Academy supports cadets, particularly those who struggle to navigate its procedures or ask for assistance.
She remains open to a future executive officer assignment, but enjoys staff work and is uncertain whether shipboard command is her own ambition or something she feels a successful Commander should pursue.
Personally, she hopes to find a loving partner and eventually build a family. She does not have a fixed timetable, though she occasionally compares her progress with friends who have already settled down.
Hobbies & Interests Laila enjoys swimming, baking, historical mysteries and romantic novels. She attends live music performances when her schedule allows and likes exploring unfamiliar cafés with friends.
She keeps in regular contact with her siblings and visits Bristol when possible. Her family affectionately tease her tendency to organise holidays and gatherings with the precision of an official visit.

Personal History Laila grew up in a busy, affectionate household in Bristol. As the eldest of three children, she often helped keep family plans running smoothly. Her parents encouraged independence, consideration for others and the confidence to speak up when something was wrong.
She entered Starfleet Academy at eighteen. Although interested in exploration, she was especially drawn to operations and the work required to keep a diverse crew functioning together. She performed well academically and became a dependable organiser during group exercises. Her early difficulty was accepting that a team could succeed using a method other than her own.

After graduating at twenty-two, Laila served as a junior shipboard operations officer. Routine work taught her that accurate schedules, clear handovers and sensible personnel assignments were essential to a ship’s effectiveness. She gained additional responsibility through relief missions, visiting delegations and coordination between departments.

During an evacuation operation, she identified that the proposed transport assignments would separate several dependent evacuees from their carers. She raised the problem with her superior and helped revise the manifests without compromising the evacuation timetable. The experience strengthened her interest in personnel work and earned her favourable attention.

Subsequent assignments brought increasing responsibility in operational planning and staff administration. She developed a reputation for resolving complicated problems without allowing the people affected to disappear behind the paperwork. Her promotions came quickly, supported by strong evaluations and successful performance in more demanding posts.

Returning to Starfleet Academy as a Lieutenant Commander, Laila worked in personnel coordination before joining Vice Admiral Alina Clover’s staff. Her reliability, discretion and ability to prepare useful briefings led to her appointment as the Admiral’s personal assistant. At thirty-two, she was promoted to Commander while continuing in that role.

Her personal life has developed less smoothly. One previous relationship ended after repeated cancelled plans and broken promises; another left her responsible for arranging almost every meeting and maintaining most of the contact. She eventually ended both, but recognises that she stayed too long because she hoped things would improve.

Laila remains optimistic about romance. She is learning to look for consistency rather than build expectations around an occasional thoughtful gesture. Close friends provide a welcome source of perspective, particularly when she is tempted to interpret a pleasant conversation as the beginning of something more.
