1,668 words; about a 8 minute read

Mission: Andromeda
Location: USS Tokyo (NCC-91101)- Briefing Toom
Timeline: About six hours after "Where Are We?"

She then placed her coffee mug down on the table. "I understand you're all tired. However after this briefing you will all be relieved to get some rest. But this needs to be addressed first." Taiga explained to them simply. "If we were currently in the Alpha or Beta Quadrant then this would be a lot different. I would be co-ordinating with Starfleet Command and you would all be in the dark. However, we are in another galaxy in a Dyson Sphere similar to the Jenolan Dyson Sphere discovered by the Enterprise D."

Taiga took a breath and then another sip of her coffee. She tapped on her control panel. An image of a Molecule chain appeared above the table. "Anyone recognise this?"

"I do." Daxer spoke up, tapping her ocular implant to signify to Taiga where her information came from. "It's called the Omega particle. The Borg refer to it as particle 010. It is the most powerful, and most dangerous particle in the known universe."

"Well, this has just been the week that keeps on giving..." Chisato lamented. "I take it that this has something to do with our current predicament?"

"There is a top secret directive of the Starfleet Charter. It is for Captain's of Starships and above only. It's called The Omega Directive." Taiga said to them all. "It's quite simple. Once the Omega particle has been detected by any Starfleet vessel. That vessel is to immediately initiate the Omega Directive. Which is to seek out and destroy the Omega Particle."

Taiga took a breath. "According to the Directive. All other orders, directives and tasks are immediately recinded. That includes the Prime Directive. Everything goes 'out of the window' and is forgotten about until the Omega particle is destroyed." Taiga explained to them all her tone serious and to the point. "Technically Starfleet Captain's shouldn't even discuss this with their crew. But; considering where we are... I thought it best that you all know. This is far from ideal to be happening now."

This made Eli pop his head up. "Omega is a rumor. Nothing but myth and whispers. I had a roommate at the academy tell me once that's why the Lantaru sector can't be traversed, cause the rumor is that somekind of experiment went wrong. But everyone know that the Lantaru sector is a natural phenomenon."

"Seems like an awful lot of trouble for Starfleet Command to go to in service of a myth, don't you think?" Chisato was quick to point out. "I mean, if we take it at face value that Starfleet Command has an entire protocol in place that essentially overrides the Prime Directive, then clearly there's something out there that they're afraid of."

Taiga tapped on her control panel. An image of an old starbase came up on the screen. "This is the research station in the Lantaru system as you mentioned doctor." She explained. The base had a huge gaping hole in the side which was glowing. "Those rumours, they're true. The Omega Particle has one devastating effect which was first recorded in this sector." She paused for a moment. "If the particle becomes unstable and explodes, like it did here. It destroys subspace."

“Good god, it’s true?!?” The doctor could hardly believe it and frankly felt a little scared.

Taiga nodded. "Indeed it is. That is why this directive exists and why the entire Lantaru system is a no-go zone." she told them all. "Without subspace, ships can't use warp drive. Without warp drive... Well, you get the idea."

"It's no myth." Daxer spoke up again, before sipping her tea. She set it back on the table, before continuing. "Once assimilated, every Borg is immediately given quite a bit of information about the Omega directive, the Omega particle, and instructions to assimilate it at all costs."

Talia looked towards Taiga. “If this Omega particle is so powerful and dangerous just how are we supposed to destroy it? Wouldn’t it put the entire ship and crew at risk of being killed? One mistake and there’d be nothing left.”

"There are a few ways we can do this." Taiga stated. "The Starship Voyager used a resonance harmonic chamber to destroy the particle. But thats only after they found and stole it." she looked around them all. "Our first priority should be discovering the source of the Omega Molecule, then we'll work on a way to take and destroy it." she looked briefly over at the windows.

"Thats what I should say to you all, as per the book." Taiga stated. "However, I believe that this Dyson Sphere that we're in has something to do with the Omega Molecule. So, before we look at ways of destroying it. I want to explore options on how we can use it, to get us all home."

Lieutenant Yuvek had heard some discussion of a the mythical particle during his training onboard his first vessel; however, he had just written it off as just conjecture and exaggeration. However, hearing that it was very real and very dangerous put it into a whole new light for the pilot.

"Ma'am," The Cardassian said, raising his hand. "From what I understand, all Starfleet Captains are given the directive to seek out and destroy the particle wherever it is located." He began.

"But we're literally a million light years away from Federation space. We have no idea what form of life inhabits this portion of the universe, nor do we know what their understanding of the Omega particle is." He pointed out. "For all we know, they could use it as a power source or something significant and here we come out of nowhere blowing it all to hell." He pointed out.

Taiga nodded. "Thats the idea. Starfleet considered Omega to be far too dangerous for anyone to have or use. Regardless of what it is being used for." she looked at Jased dead in the eyes. "I understand how it can be seen as narrow minded of us to simply go ahead and destroy it."

She broke away from her gaze. "Which is why, once you have all rested. We will be forming an away team to look for the Omega Particles. Once we have located them, we will determine if we can use that power to send us home. If we can't, I will give the order to destroy them. Even if that means we remain here indefinitely."

With that said she pushed herself up from her chair. "Right now however. I am ordering you all to sleep. I orders for you in ten hours. Dismissed."

"Before you all leave, I have some things to add." Daxer spoke up immediately. With everything going on, she knew that the things she was about to say needed to get out sooner rather than later. "First, as of now I'm assuming command of the Tokyo's security department. With out current situation, and a lack of a proper department head, it is the logical choice."

"Uh..." Chisato glanced over at Taiga. "Captain, does she have the proper authorization to-?"

Nezuko also raised an eyebrow, questioning this development.

Taiga wasn't at all surprised at what Daxer was doing. In fact she fully expected it. "She is more than qualified to run the Security/Tactical department. In fact, Daxer did hold the rank of Commander before she resigned her commission and went into Civilian Intelligence..." Taiga paused. She then looked directly at Daxer. "Daxer, I'm hereby reinstating you as a Starfleet Officer. You'll hereby become the Chief Security/Tactical Officer and you shall retain your rank."

"That'll do at least for now, Captain." Jen said, looking at her long time friend. She knew Taiga would understand her comment. "Just know that my original orders also still stand."

The Vulcan woman was quiet for another short moment before she continued again. "During the rescue mission, I learned a great deal about the threat that the Elachi pose." Jen said, suddenly seeming all business. She knew that this was going to be a hard pill to swallow, and didn't want her emotions running away from her. "Diplomacy is useless. They are blindly following orders from another species, and will gladly throw themselves at you until you lose, or they do, so killing them is your only option.

The most important thing to know is they're not just an invading nuisance... From what I can tell, they're looking for ways to completely annihilate more than just the Federation. I think they might be trying to wipe out the entire Alpha quadrant, or maybe the entire galaxy. To put it bluntly, I'm pretty sure we just landed ourselves in what appears to be an attempt at a galaxy wide extinction event." Daxer looked around at the others who were looking back at her. "If you have any questions, now would be the time to ask. If not, then we should all do what Taiga has ordered and get some sleep."

Talia nodded and stood ready to head back to her quarters, the only problem was she wasnt sure if she could face being alone without Thomas.

It seemed the more that they looked into this rabbit hole, the deeper things got; Elachi, Iconians, Dyson Spheres, Omega Particles, and now possibly galactic extinction? Chisato could've played bingo with all the buzz words that were getting thrown around here. As much as she had been longing for some shuteye- which she felt was especially well-deserved, considering all she'd been through in the last 24 hours- with all of this new information to consider, she had no doubt it would have an impact on her ability to sleep...
