Backpost: Addressing a Problem

Posted on Sun Mar 30th, 2025 @ 10:40pm by Lieutenant JG Nezuko & Commander Thomas Johnson & Lieutenant Dr. Eli Ellis M.D.

860 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Andromeda
Timeline: Before battle with the Elachi

Thomas walked out of the office, and down the corridor. This, was important, so this wasn't going to be waiting. Sure the liklihood of them finding a place that would drain Nezukos breathing apparatus was minimal, or at least he hoped. He still didn't like the odds.

"Lt Graesyn, can you meet me in medical, there is something Lt Nezuko and I would like to discuss." He tapped the badge again. "Dr. Ellis... are you in medical at the moment?"

"I am, Commander. Presently in Main Sickbay stowing the last of the supplies before we cast off." The eager voice of Dr. Eli Ellis pipes through the comm.

"Very well, Lt Nezuko and I will be there in a few minutes."

Nezuko walked with the XO, very happy with the way this was going. She had been scared for her life when suddenly she lost access to her breathing apparatus on the bridge. That had turned into weeks of isolation, broken up only by visits from friends to keep her sane. Maybe with the help of Dr. Ellis and Lieutenant Graesyn, they might find a way to make sure it never happened again.

Before they knew it, they were through the door into sickbay. She waved to the doctor.

"Doctor... just wanted to run a few things by you."

Eli walks over, hands in his lab coat pockets. He’d just finished up the last of his paperwork and stowing the supplies when they walked into sickbay.

“Of course, how can I assist you?” He asked, professionally, giving them his full attention.

"Well, we were wondering if you can help solve the problem of the rebreather... we almost lost her last mission because of the power drain. We can't let that happen again."

Sarah came into Sickbay just in time to hear the bit about power drain and as she rounded the corner she addressed the trio already standing there. “I had a couple of thoughts after that mission… but at the moment they are all very much in the research stage. Having input from the Doctor would absolutely help.”

"If its all tech... why not something with the bioneural... our gel packs didnt get affected on the mission... kind of impossible to make the lt carry one of them every where however."

“Actually…. That’s not a terrible idea. I may be able to miniaturize gel pack technology to a degree and incorporate it into a specialized exo-suit specifically for Lieutenant Nezuko. I would have to make it more or less as a custom fit and it might be a little bulkier… but it shouldn’t be impossible to do.” Sarah replied cooly.

"That would work if we are in a pinch, and need something fast... bulkier wouldn't be a great thing for constant use like the ones she uses now." Thomas replied liking the idea, it was doable. Which was promising. "Is there any way to harness the electrical field of a persons body. Dumb question. I know we all have an electrical field ourselves. Would something like that be able to be tapped into... kind of like being our own battery."

"Like 'The Matrix'? Could be feasible, but I'd have to do some research. There might be a risk of overloading the body with neuron responses that could overwhelm the brain in that situation. Might we adapt some Marine power armor for this task, Commander?"

The good doctor pondered for a moment, scribbling on his PADD as he spoke.

"Since this deals with a potential life changing thing for the Lt... do whatever you think will help you."

“Marine power armor has personal shielding doesn’t it?” Sarah asked, a thought coming to mind but she very much needed to check on a couple things before she revealed too much of the idea that had occurred.

"It does, but the power is too great for what we would need to use it for."

Nezuko was watching the exchange among the experts, fascinated by it all. "The exo-suit idea is excellent for emergency use," the PADD said aloud for her as she typed. "The EVA suit I had to use when we launched was far too inconvenient, so something more form-fitting would be perfect. I am keen to explore the bio electric option, but had not considered the potential for overload. Perhaps we can run some tests to see how much power my own body's electric field generates, and, in case of surge, what the threshold might be before I suffer injury." She wasn't sure where the Marine power armor would come into play. She was keen to avoid anything bulky. She lived for years with the smallest apparatus imaginable and if the size had to scale up then it would need to be reserved for emergencies.

"We can run some simulations before we commit to any replication of parts." Eli postulated.

Nezuko nodded and gestured for them to move to a computer terminal and get to work….
