Mission:
Flight Of The Valkyries
Location: Iconian Starbase
Timeline: March 18th, 2397
Commander Hunt fired off a couple of shots as the away team made their way down the corridor. The base was starting to come apart due to the damage they caused inside, which led to the Starfleet Forces on the outside getting the job done. This was good news for those on the outside, but for them, they had been spending the time ducking and dodging Heralds who figured out they had been infiltrated.
The process had worked. Nezuko had neutralized the Omega particles in engineering, so the damage done in the armory and elsewhere would tear apart the station but not subspace. And now the away team was working to get out, causing as much secondary damage as they could along the way.
Heralds chased in pursuit as they wanted so desperately to kill the Federation intruders. One collapsed as he took a hit to the chest. The others with him didn't even bother to check on him as they kept moving forward.
For her part, Nezuko was seeing what she could do to interfere with Herald responses. Forcefields blocked some. Communications static bothered others.
That there were still this many was a problem.
[Elsewhere on the Iconian Station]
"Major, I've found the Away Team, they're close, but there are a large number of hostiles converging on their position." The Marine Comm. tech reported.
"Okay, Corporal, relay the Away Team's coordinates to the Colonel." Jah replied. "Sergeant Malic, get the team together, we're going hunting."
"Aye, ma'am." They both said and went about their orders.
[Away Team Location]
The Heralds tightened their circle, moving forward closer to the Starfleet away team. Purple and orange beams of weapons fire zapped through the air as they proceeded to advance.
"Away Team to Tokyo, we could really use that backup right now!" Lieutenant Inoue stressed as she fired off a few more shots to keep the Heralds at bay.
"Tokyo here. The Marines are en-route. Hang in there a little longer," the officer from Tokyo replied.
"About how much longer? We're running a bit short on time..." Lieutenant Inoue's voice trailed off as she spotted a Herald suddenly materialize behind Devon.
"COMMANDER, DUCK!" She shouted as she spun around and blasted the Herald point-blank in the chest, causing it to disintegrate in a brilliant ball of purple flame.
Without thinking, Devon dropped to the ground. Watching the Herald disappear; allowed Hunt to sigh in relief as he nodded his appreciation towards Inoue. Before he knew, the Commander was quickly back on his feet and into the fight again. "Commander Hunt to recovery team. What's your ETA to our location?"
"This is Major Jahira, our ETA is 5minutes, keep your head down Commander."
[Marines Location]
"Colonel." Uni spoke up. "I'm sensing intense emotions. As I have determined that the Heralds either don't have emotions or can't be read by Betazoids, I believe these are from the away team." She explained.
Sina said. "Emotions or not, you can tell a lot from their movements and tactics."
"Enough." Ash interjected with a growl. "Uni, are you sure you're sensing the away team?"
Uni nodded. "Definitely. There's no doubt. I can't seem to read the Heralds at all." She explained.
Major Jahira's team entered the area from a different direction to the Colonel's, trapping the remaining Heralds in a position where they were taking fire from three sides.
"Okay, Marines, this is the last dance, pick your partners and make some noise." She ordered.
Her people took up their positioned and opened fire.
"Malic, T'Rak, grab the transport enhancers, you're with me."
"Aye, Ma'am." They both said, strapping the transporter enhancers to each others back.
Ready, the three Marines made their way to the Away Team, while the other Marines laid down covering fire.
When a Herald got too close, T'Rak slid under the hostile's weapon and dissembled it with her Vulcan blade. Showering herself in its ichor-like 'blood'.
Eventually they reached the Away Team. Keeping low, Jah, introduced herself to the Commander.
"It's good to meet you Major," Hunt acknowledged. "What's the extraction plan looking like?"
Uni took position at the rear of the away team as more Heralds emerged. "Better get those transporter enhancers set up quickly." She said. Lifting her rifle up to eye level, looking down the scope she focused on her target. Her finger hovered over the trigger as she lined up her sights.
She leant over the crate in front of her, using it to stabilise her position. It had taken many years to get to where she was now. From shooting vermin on her family's farm back on Betazed as a child and teenager, to the marine boot camp and now finally here in the intense heat of battle. Uni closed one eye as she peered through her scope, making sure to block out the floodwaters of emotions around her as slowly her finger made contact with the trigger.
She pulled it back. A single deadly phaser bolt erupted from the end of her rifle, striking the Herald in the chest. At least it resembled a chest. The Herald soldier that had become to be known as a 'Construct' was more like an animated suit of armour created of some strange alien purple energy. Yet still, the phaser bolt cut through the chest plate. The Herald construct seemed to explode as if vaporised by the impact, disappearing instantly.
Uni reset her rifle with quick and efficient proficiency. As a sniper it was her job to hit from a distance. She killed from the shadows and never faced her opponent directly. She was used to lurking, having time to line up the perfect shot. The shot that would dispatch the target first time. Sometimes it felt wrong, or even unfair. Many of her targets never knew she was there, or that they were even been targeted from the shadows. But here Uni was, crouched behind the crate, using it as a shooting platforms, her only focus now: to take out Heralds that never knew she was there.
When the Marines arrived with the pattern enhancers, Teneca said. "Inoune, help me set these up as she retrieved one from Malic's back.
Lieutenant Inoue nodded and moved over to assist Teneca with the setup.
Devon was highly impressed with the accuracy of Uni as a sniper. Damn near a perfect shot himself. He didn't have a thing on the marine. Taking aim down the corridor, the Commander fired off a couple of shots, laying down cover fire.
While the others deployed the patter enhancers, Nezuko worked on her PADD to get them properly online and connected. They each began to glow and hum, though configuring them to get them all out would take a moment.
"Major Jah!" Ashok shouted beckoning her to his position. When she was close enough, the Colonel continued. "I want you to take your group and establish a tight perimeter. Eyes and ears open. Let's open up the window of time to get everyone out of here."
"Aye, sir." Jah replied. Then over comms. "2nd Platoon, form a tight perimeter. Let's send these p'taq back where they came from. Q'plaH."
"Lieutenant Uni! Front a centre!" Ash roared.
Uni secured her rifle, setting the safety as she rushed over to Ashok. "Yes sir?" she asked simply.
"I want you to find a nearby vantage point and establish an over watch. Maintain an open comm with every Marine out here. Feed them enemy locations and warn them of any approaching threat." The Klingon placed a firm hand on her shoulder and leaned in. "Shoot when needed. You are their eyes and they are relying on you to keep them appraised of any in coming threats. I know you want to fire away at them, but I don't need you to do that, right now. I need you to do this. Place your finger on the trigger only when there is no one else to handle the threat, but keep in mind. While you're focused on one threat, you could miss another. Choose your shots. Right now, the focus isn't building your kill count. It's getting these officers extracted. Understood?"
Uni nodded. "Aye sir." she replied. She looked around, her eyes darting across what seemed to be some sort of cargo bay. Running around the vast room seemed to be some sort of walkway, with a ladder leading up. She wasted no time as she quickly darted for the ladder. Once at the top, she laid down on her belly, staying low and keeping her rifle trained forward.
Tapping her comm badge "Miralen to all Marines. I have over watch. No signs of enemy reinforcement as of yet." She announced. "Scratch that. Six enemy targets approaching from the adjacent corridor on main level at Ten o'clock." There was a slight pause. "Six Constructs, each armed with a staff weapon. They are holding position."
Ashok walked over to Hunt. "Lieutenant Commander Hunt? Lieutenant Colonel Ashok, Marine Commander for the Tokyo. Commander Johnson task me and my Marines with getting you out of here. As soon as you Lieutenant Nezuko gets the transport enhancers up and running, and we have a clear comm with the Tokyo, we can begin sending your people up." He held his Phaser Rifle close to his chest, keeping the barrel facing downward as he kept his finger off the trigger. "Is there anything you need to share before we get started? Are you missing anyone, for example? Is there anything unfinished?"
"Colonel, our task here is complete," Hunt answered. "These Heralds are out for blood after the damage we did here."
2nd Platoon formed a tight perimeter. Sergeant Malic stayed close to Jahira. They'd served together for many years and established a mutual trust, so she'd requested him when she was assigned to the Tokyo.
Sniper Sergeant Asezo Sh'vhiathen joined Uni. "I thought you could use a second pair of eyes, sir." She said. "I'll watch your six, while you watch everybody else's."
Uni nodded in response. "Six more incoming." She reported. "Four Constructs and two Defilers. They appear heavily armed, coming from ten o'clock. Prioritise fire on the Defilers, they are heavily armed." She added to her comm call. "Reported targets are moving towards our position."
"Acknowledged, Over watch." Ash said as he prepared his phaser rifle and took position. "You heard the lady, Marines. Let's handle this! Defiler is the primary. Once that one's down... no holding back!"
Sina retrieved a tactical bow from a small backpack she carried. Prepared it for firing and fired an arrow at a Defiler. The teflon coated 'missile' found its target and cut though the armour like a hot knife through butter.
The Marine dived out of the way as the Iconian's Heavy Weapon fired obliteration in her direction.
A fire fight soon began, with the Heralds firing their purple beams as the Marines returned fire the orange phaser fire. Beams and pulses of energy fire bounced off of crates, bulkheads and occasionally struck a Herald, or a marine. The Heralds seemed to poof away if black smoke as they fell, whilst the Starfleet Marines were vaporised in agony as they were struck.
The air was filled with the sound of not only weapons fire, but occasionally the ear splitting scream of a Marine who succumbed to the Herald weapon fire. It had turned into nothing short of a bloodbath, a fight to the death.
The wait for Nezuko to finish felt interminable, but amid the weapons fire some positive chimes could be heard. The pattern enhancers were operational.
Nezuko tapped Devon’s shoulder and gave him a thumbs-up.
"Tokyo to Away Team. We're coming in close now. Prepare for beam out!" Came a voice through their comm badges.
"Away team first! Head for the circle!" Ashok shouted in between firing shots at the approaching Heralds. "Get the primary objective off planet! Jah, prepare your group to move inward. Maintain cover fire and watch your six! No one falls today!"
"Understood, Colonel." Jahira said. "Gern, J'val, Rollins, move in on my mark."
Teneca took her place within the transporter field and indicated to Hunt she was ready.
The pull of the transporter could be felt as the Starfleet away team members were engulfed in blue and white dots and shimmering lights.
"Tokyo to Marine's. We have the away team. Its your turn!" came the next call over the Marines comm badges. Still under heavy fire, the Marines pulled back and into the circle of Transporter enhancers.
Uni, took one last shot, taking down a Herald construct before jumping to her feet. She slid down the ladder from her position and was the last to join the gathered Marines. She looked over at Ashok, she had confirmed that they were all there. "All good to go sir." She reported.
Just like the Starfleet team, they were soon engulfed in blue and white dots and light. The Heralds continued firing, rushing upon their position. Several of their shots aimed through the marines mid-transport.
Within a few seconds, the area was clear of Starfleet and Marine personnel. The Heralds lowered their weapons, only to be caught in an explosion that ripped outwards from a nearby crate. Similar smaller explosions throughout the starbase erupted, causing internal damage and spreading throughout the structure. Secondary explosions followed, as the destruction chain linked throughout the Starbase, starting its fate. Total destruction from inside out.
