Mission:
The Return
Location: USS Tokyo
Timeline: February 27, 2397
Taiga pondered for a couple of seconds. It was risky to break free of the Starbase, they would lose their ability to beam off the survivors and assist with the evacuation. However with the arrival of the Klingons, there was a chance they could push the Heralds further back and create more time for Commander Johnson and his team to speed up the evacuation. It was a gamble, a big one.
"Break free of the Starbase, we have a better chance with the Klingons here now. Lets not waste this chance." Taiga ordered. "Lets push them back and make more time for Commander Johnson to evacuate the starbase. Weapons hot, target the next cruiser."
Lieutenant Yuvek's jaw tightened as the order came through. Breaking from the starbase. Abandoning our cover. With the away team still over there.
"Acknowledged, Captain," he responded, his tone flat and professional despite his reservations.
His hands moved across the helm controls, bringing the Tokyo out from beneath the starbase's protective bulk. The Klingon Birds-of-Prey were already darting through the battlefield like predators - rolling, diving, executing impossible turns that made Yuvek's job infinitely harder.
"Coming about, attempting to coordinate with Klingon attack patterns," he called out, watching one Bird-of-Prey execute a barrel roll directly across their bow.
The Herald cruiser they were targeting began aggressive evasive maneuvers, clearly trying to shake both the nimble Klingon ships and the Tokyo. It banked hard to starboard, the Birds-of-Prey following effortlessly.
"Target cruiser maneuvering - Klingon vessels in pursuit," Yuvek reported, pushing the Tokyo into a pursuit vector. The carrier's bulk fought him, unable to match the sudden direction changes. "Attempting to maintain weapons lock."
"Compensating for target's evasive pattern," he announced, studying the cruiser's movements. There - a pattern. The Herald captain was good, but predictable. Banking right, then rolling left to throw off pursuit. Lieutenant Yuvek stopped trying to match their turns and instead plotted an intercept course.
The Tokyo surged forward on the new heading, and suddenly the Herald cruiser was exactly where the Cardassian had calculated it would be.
"Targeting Cruiser, ma'am." Lt. jg Pryana Z'Kan reported from tactical.
Phasers lanced the Cruiser, piercing their aft shields. A second blast took the Herald ships aft torpedo launchers off-line
A beam weapon struck their shields and overloaded one of the science consoles, causing a fire within reach of Nezuko. She quickly grabbed one of the fire extinguishers to put it out, stepping away from her station for just a few seconds to do so.
"Full phaser barrage, add in some quantum torpedoes." Taiga said. With the Tokyo's bow now facing the Herald ship, they could focus all their firepower on one spot.
The ship shuddered violently as the Herald beam overloaded the science console, and Yuvek felt the helm response degrade immediately. Warning indicators flashed across his display - power fluctuations affecting the maneuvering systems.
"Nezuko," Lieutenant Yuvek called out urgently, his hands fighting to keep the Tokyo on their attack vector, "I need you to stabilize power flow to the maneuver and propulsion systems. That hit knocked out several primary relays - I'm losing precision control on the maneuvering thrusters."
His console showed the cruiser starting to adjust its position, trying to present stronger shield facings to their assault. The Tokyotrembled under the sustained weapons fire pouring from the other active ships still in the battle.
"Tactical, you've got about 30 seconds before the Herald Cruiser is out of targeting range." Lieutenant Yuvek said to tactical as he worked to keep their bow locked on the Herald cruiser despite the battle damage degrading his control authority.
"Aye, sir." Pryana said. Her hands moving over the controls. "Quantum Torpedoes narrow spread, away."
The torpedoes impacted with the cruiser's shields. The combined barrage creating a hole in them.
The Tactical officer then concentrated phaser fire on the hole, slicing through the ship's hull before they could reinstate the shields.
"Captain the enemy cruiser is venting atmosphere." Pryana reported.
With the newly arrived tactical officer, he was able to move over to the console behind the captains chair to coordinate the attacks with the other ships, the Cortana, and the Klingons.
"Klingons advising us to pull away, they intend to use what they call the mother of all torpedoes..." Connor replied confused. "Coming from the Klingons, lets follow their advice. there are other ships out there for the taking."
"Swooping in to claim our kill huh..." Taiga replied. "Lets not give them their kill. Bank us to port, empty the torpedo tubes into that breach. Then move onto the next target!" She ordered. "Hit and run."
"Aye, ma'am, torpedoes away, right down the line." Pryana replied.
When the torpedoes hit the cruiser, it caused a chain reaction that blew the enemy craft to pieces.
"Obtaining new target." Pryana reported as the cruiser's explosive death filled the view screen.
[USS Malinche]
The old Starship shook violently as the Herald's weapons tore through the hull. The lights from the ships viewports began to flicker and bright blue plasma began to leak out from the port nacelle. However the Malinche continued to fight on, its bright orange phasers blasting out.
However, it was being slowly surrounded by four Herald Cruisers. They were moving in slowly, circling the crippled starship ready to deliver the final blow to their prey. Then it began.
Purple beams ripped through the Malinche's hull, some of them penetrating through the vessel and out of the opposite side. The ships phaser stopped firing, as it seemed to roll and list like a wounded animal. Small hatches on the hull began to burst open, and escape pods darted out. However, they were easy pickings for the Herald ships. Purple beams picked off the escape pods like they were insects.
Tiny explosions from the escape pods being destroyed littered around the wreck of the starship. The ship began to break apart, several explosions rippling from under the skin of the hull. The saucer section began to crumble and come apart as more purple beams sliced it apart like it was apple pie.
Then with one final act of resistance, the impulse engines roared into life. Spinning like an American Football, the old Excelsior Class charged at one of the Herald cruisers. It left a trail of debris in its wake, as sections of the ship were ripped away whilst she charged. The Malinche ploughed head first into the Herald Cruiser, engulfing them both in a huge bright fireball.
[USS Tokyo Bridge]
"My god..." Taiga exclaimed in shock. She had never expected to see that.
Pryana made a slight prayer that crew of the Malinche would be welcomed by her ancestors into the Eternal Hunting Grounds, as great warriors.
Lieutenant Yuvek's hands froze on his console as he watched the Malinche's final moments play out on the tactical display. The escape pods being picked off one by one. The hull breaking apart under concentrated fire. Then that last desperate charge.
Just like the Kanna.
His jaw clenched so hard it ached. Another ship. Another crew doing everything right, fighting with everything they had, and it didn't matter. The Heralds just kept killing, kept destroying, methodical and merciless. How many ships have to die before we find a way to actually win?
He forced his hands back to the helm controls, forced himself to focus on the Tokyo's position, their attack vector, the tactical geometry that might keep them alive for the next few minutes. But the image of those escape pods exploding - tiny sparks of life extinguished without hesitation - burned behind his eyes.
"Malinche destroyed," he reported, his voice flat and mechanical. Professional. Because that's what you did. You reported the dead and kept flying. "Adjusting course to avoid debris field."
Another crew that won't make it home. Another list of names for the memorial. he thought.
His fingers tightened on the helm controls. The Tokyo continued its attack run, and Lieutenant Yuvek kept them on course with cold precision. Because there was nothing else to do. Nothing but keep fighting and hope the next ship destroyed wasn't theirs.
"Captain, the Klingons have stated their long range sensors are picking up another dozen herald ships... We cannot win this." Connor replied from his position. He brought up a viewscreen showing the fleet entering the system.
"Captain Korath on viewer." He replied
Korath looked back at the captain. "Captain, it has been an honor fighting side by side... send your remaining crew and ships to the nearest starbase. We will keep them occupied so you can fight another day."
Lieutenant Yuvek watched the tactical display as the Klingon ships repositioned themselves between the Tokyo and the incoming Herald reinforcements. Twelve more ships. Against what - three, maybe four Klingon vessels that were already damaged?
His fingers hovered over the navigation controls, ready to execute whatever order came next. Escape vectors were already calculated in his mind - using the Klingons' defensive screen to maximum effect. Cold mathematics. Clinical precision.
The bridge fell silent except for the hum of systems and the distant sounds of battle. Everyone waiting for Captain Taiga's response. Everyone knowing what it would have to be.
The deck was now stacked more against them. With the Malinche destroyed and more ships incoming, this battle was taking a turn for the worst. Taiga's grip on the arms of her chair tightened turning her knuckles almost white. The Tokyo shook again as she pondered, analysed and thought about their next move.
"Order the Starfleet ships to fall back to the Starbase. Have all Starfighters cover our retreat." She ordered. "Put the Tokyo at the rear, we'll provide rear cover fire. We'll pick up as many survivors off the starbase as we can."
Before the crew could carry out her orders, the Tokyo shook violently. Herald weapons fire struck the hull, penetrating deep into the vessel. It cut through the Tokyo like a hot knife through butter.
Consoles on the bridhe exploded, sparks showered down om the crew aa the ship rocked. Tge Tokyo had been critically hit. The lights and consoles flickered as the ships main power began to fail.
"Bridge to Engineering. Damage report?!" Taiga called out.
"That hit took out three primary EPS power conduits! We have a breach of six meters square in the portside. It cut eight decks deep, over twelve sections. Emergency forcefields are holding, but it'll be a while until we can get main power stabalised." Came the response from Engineering.
Taiga slammed her fist down in frustration. They were more or less dead in the water.
An eerie silence fell upon the bridge as the image of a huge Herald cruiser loomed over them. Taiga's comm badge then chirpped, breaking the silence.
"Johnson to Tokyo... We are waiting for beam out, will be at the location in two minutes."
Taiga tapped the badge in response. "We've been critically hit Tom. I doubt we'll be back soon, if ever... Get as many people out as you can. You're on your own now. Good luck..."
Taiga stared at the cruiser, she could see its primary weapon charging up. "Well, this is it people. It's been an honour to have been your captain."
