Mission:
The Return
Location: Starbase 234 Space, USS Tokyo Sickbay, USS Tokyo Bridge
Timeline: February 27, 2397
[Starfighters]
"All fighters. Engage the smaller destroyers, provide cover fire for the Tokyo get in and assist in the evacuation of the starbase. You're authorised to engage with weapons hot." Snowflake relayed to the entire squadron.
"Roger that, Snowflake," Nozomi radioed back. "Triumph Squadron, assault vector formation; fights on!"
Following Nozomi's lead, Triumph Squadron banked sharply to the left, rolling underneath the Akio before popping back up, guns blazing, to engage the nearest destroyer.
“On me, Ducatis,” Vyse ordered the Twins. “Weapons free.”
Aika, for her part, followed Harley squadron toward their own targets.
"We're with you!" Twin 1 and Twin 2 responded over the comm.
[Sickbay]
The Tokyo's main sickbay was flooded with the injured from the Denmark. The Tokyo's medical staff were rushing around attempting to save as many lives as possible. Both Yoshika and Amu had been called up to the main sickbay to help where they could.
In the surgical bay, Nyx worked as quickly as she could on the ensign in front of her, trying to stop the bleeding that seemed to only change locations whenever she plugged one hole. It was a race against time. It was a race that Nyx lost as the lifesigns dwindled and went flat. She tried desperately to bring him back, but her efforts were in vain. She rested one hand on his shoulder before nodding to the orderly that was present and she ran a sterilizer over her hands as the body was removed and another one clinging to life was placed on the surgical table, her eyes unflinching and face set as the Chief Petty Officer was placed in front of her. Vitals were stronger, but while they had already lost an arm, he was about to lose a lower leg as well, the mangled former part of a body worst for wear. At least this was the last of the critical cases.
Counselor Ralen Trellis had made it back on board and made his way to sickbay. Upon stepping into the area, he immediately felt Jaret's combat medical training snap into focus. The chaos was familiar - too familiar. Wounded everywhere, medical staff overwhelmed, the sharp smell of blood and burned flesh.
"Triage station, now," he called out to a nearby orderly, moving to where the Denmark casualties were being beamed in. His tricorder was already out, scanning the first patient - severe burns, stable vitals, yellow tag.
"This one can wait. Move them to secondary treatment," he directed, his voice carrying the authority of someone who'd done this before. Or rather, someone whose previous host had done this before.
He moved quickly to the next patient, his hands working with practiced efficiency. Red tag - internal bleeding, immediate surgery required. "Get this one to surgical bay two, stat!"
Another scan. Black tag. He closed his eyes briefly, then moved on. Can't save them all. Focus on the ones you can. He thought to himself grimly as he remained focused on the task at hand.
"I need two nurses over here!" he called out, kneeling beside a Bolian officer with compound fractures. His counseling training merged seamlessly with Jaret's field medicine - keeping patients calm while assessing injuries, explaining procedures while administering hyposprays.
Not surgical work. But sorting, stabilizing, prioritizing. Keeping people alive long enough for the surgeons to save them. One patient at a time.
"Next casualty, bring them forward!"
Amongst the chaos, Amu was helping the best she could. However she was struggling due to being thirty eight weeks pregnant. She waddled from patient to patient. Suddenly she stopped, her eyes opened wide as she looked down at the floor.
"Not now..." she said outloud to herself.
"Doctor Valentine..." she called out. "I think I might need some help over here..." she said simply a slight blush flushing into her cheeks. She simply pointed down, to the puddle of fluid she was now standing in.
Nyx had stepped out of surgical bay 1 to get a physical glance at the cacophony of the entire medical bay and the voice of Amu had snapped her head over in her direction, the expressionless look on her face giving no clue what was going through her mind. It was replaced by a small smile of reassurance as she moved quickly over to the other doctor on board. This was bad, very bad, because she didn’t have enough hands on deck as it was. “Orderly, cleanup on aisle two.” She pointed at one of the less busy personnel, then took the smaller doctor by the elbow and steered her away.
The chair was filled with one of the less experienced nurses, frantically updating records as people arrived, “Out.” Nyx commanded her in a no-nonsense voice and the twenty year old vacated the seat like a rocket and Nyx guided Amu into the seat with more experience than she cared to admit, “Nope, this is not happening right now, Doctor, wait here.” The Betazoid reached for the medical kit and extracted a hypospray before taking the six steps over to the medical replicator and thought for several seconds, fingers then rapidly typing in a medication name. As the vial was replicated, she pulled it and checked the label on it, sliding it into the hypospray and verifying on the readout before making the tiny journey back to Amu, “Terbutaline injection, this is going to prevent onset of frank labor temporarily. Don’t worry, no harm will come to the baby and so long as we’re able to deliver within the next 24 hours there is no danger. Longer than that and there still isn’t any danger, just some extra precautions.
Amu nodded. She knew the drill. "We didn't need this right now!"
“This was always a possibility, so I planned for it, nothing in your file indicates an allergy and this has been used for centuries.” She gave Amu a smile, a genuine one, “So I now have two jobs for you while you sit here resting. Number one, you are going to keep an eye on your own vitals,” She spoke as she reached in for a portable monitor, placing it on the other doctor’s forehead and activating it, “If anything looks abnormal, aside from an accelerated fetal heartbeat, you are to inform me immediately. And, if you would be so kind, act as a nexus for information flow of incoming casualties and existing. Use your judgement on how to treat patients while sitting here and who needs to be seen by me most immediately. We still have a few critical cases from Denmark right now and we’re headed into another scrap, so I’m going to be rather busy for a while. The other option is that I do a quick C-Section for you, but I’d rather not if we can avoid it, but your choice.”
"Lets avoid that. Use the surgery for those who need it." Amu responded quickly.
"That's the plan, doctor. Hold tight and if we're boarded and invaded, let me know that too." Nyx gave a smile that a predator would be proud of, "You're going to be in good hands, I promise."
[Bridge]
Taiga continued gripping the arms of her chair as the Tokyo and her starfighters charged head first at the Herald ships. Bright orange phasers erupted from the phaser arrays, followed by bright white quantum torpedoes. The blue shimmer of the Tokyo's shields glistened as the starship took hits from several Herald ships.
"All available power to shields and weapons!" Taiga ordered. "Put us between those ships and the starbase!"
"Shields and weapons are at full strength Captain." Connor replied from tactical.
"Jased. Duck us under the starbase. As close as you can get. We'll drop shields and get our rescue team aboard!" Taiga said as the ship shook again. "We can use the base as a shield if needed..." she hated to admit it, but using the physical structure as a shield against the Heralds weapons fire would give them at least a few seconds they needed.
Taiga tapped her comm badge. "Bridge to Transporter Room. We're going to duck under the Starbase, we can only lower the shields for two seconds. Be on the pad and ready to go! If you miss this window everyone on that starbase is dead."
As soon as the channel closed. Taiga looked forward at the starbase. She could see the huge breaches in its hull, the debris floating in the void of space, the remains of its crew, the civilians and the fires burning inside its decks. "Now helm!"
"Aye, ma'am," Lieutenant Yuvek responded sharply, his hands already moving across the helm controls.
The Tokyo responded with practiced agility as he angled their approach toward the starbase's lower decks, the carrier's combat-oriented design allowing for tighter maneuvering than its bulk suggested. Purple beams continued to hammer their shields as he rolled the ship to present fresh facings.
He continued to guide the carrier through the debris field with controlled precision. The Tokyo wasn't a small ship, but it was built for this kind of combat maneuvering. Warning proximity alerts flashed across his console as he brought them in close to the station's ventral surface, threading through wreckage and structural debris.
The ship shuddered as Herald fire struck their upper shields, but Lieutenant Yuvek used the impacts to help fine-tune their positioning, letting the momentum assist rather than fight it. "In position directly beneath transporter coordinates," he reported.
"Ready for shield drop on your mark, Captain."
"Drop shields, Away Team NOW!" Taiga called out.
Precisely on cue, the transporter was activated. Nezuko nodded to Taiga and the others and brought the shields back up. It was done.
"Boo-yah! We're in!" Chisato proclaimed, pumping her fist excitedly.
"Bring us around!" Taiga ordered. "Lock target on the lead cruiser, full weapons. Show them what this ship can do!"
"Acknowledged," Yuvek responded, his hands already moving to bring the Tokyo back into the fight the moment the shields came back up.
"Coming about - bearing zero-nine-zero mark five," he called out, rolling the carrier out from beneath the starbase's protective cover.
