Children's Ward
"We need to get this door open!" Yoshika shouted. "They need our help!"
Thomas's stomach churned, the childrens ward. Feeling sick even thinking about what they saw, what they were going through. He nodded, and walked up to the console. yping in his security code did nothing. The system was fried, he took out his smaller hand phaser, set it to the highest setting. Turning to the other to do the same, he aimed it at the door. "Careful, we don't know whats on the other side." Firing, the beam slowly cut through the door. Within minutes, with the help of the others, were able to cut a hole big enough for them to get through.
The ward was once decorated with bright colours. There was once colourful animals painted on the walls too. However now it was a complete mess. The beds and cots were all overturned. Huge scorch and burn marks ran up the walls, and smoke drifted through the air. It was totally destroyed, yet faint cries could be heard from amongst the wreckage.
Yoshika rushed in and scanned. "Three lifesigns..." she looked away from her tricorder. It was evident that there was once more in here than just three. "Weak... one critical..."
And now the continuation...
Surgical Ward
Nyx led the second group through the wreckage with one hand firmly on the rifle and the second doing double duty with a tricorder and steadying the weapon. They were probably moving faster than was prudent in the situation, but they didn't have all day because if there were survivors, they may be wounded and the Heralds WOULD return. It wasn't a question of if, but when. "I've got three lifesigns ahead, one human, one betazoid, one bolian."
Nyx stepped over a body as she advanced quickly now, eyes scanning everything until she approached the area of the lifesigns, slinging the rifle over her shoulder to get it out of the way so she could move the body of another human off of one of them in the blue of a medical uniform. She pointed at where the other two were located and made a brief scan of the prone form in front of her both visually and with the tricorder, then started to turn them over and mentally cringed at the stab wound. "Don't worry Lieutenant, I've got you." A quick glance showed that it was only oozing blood rather than leaking badly and she pulled the emergency medkit around and pulled the shears she kept there to cut the uniform open before pulling a hypo from her belt and pressing it to the wounded area with a hiss. The eyes opened suddenly and the body jerked suddenly, "Hold on Lieutenant, I'm Nyx, from the Tokyo, we're here to help. I'm going to do a quick patch job on you, but we're going to send you back to Tokyo once the worst is handled." She stuck a probe into the wound.
"Wh-where are they?" The junior grade Lieutenant asked, "They came through and just... Were kiiling everything that seemed alive, why doesn't this hurt?"
"I gave you a local analgesic, they missed all of the vital organs, but you've got a slow bleed into your abdomen and I'm just going to..." She manipulated the robe to reach the location, "Cauterize the venal nick just like that." She reached into a pouch and pulled out a transporter tag and stuck it to the human's uniform, "We're going to get you back to Tokyo and finish getting you back up there." Nyx patted the medical officer on the shoulder then tapped the emergency transporter tag and they vanished in the haze.
Children's Ward
So far, they had pulled out six children from the rubble. Luckily they hadn't been too badly injured, however there were a few that hadn't survived. Yoshika was holding back her emotions at the loss of life, as she tried to find more. There were still lifesigns, but they were becoming weaker and weaker.
"Commander!" She called out at Thomas. "I need help with moving this debris." There was a piece of what had once been roof panelling, attached to a heavy support beam. Under the lifesign was fading fast.
Looking to the group. "You heard her, lets clear the area from the child."
As the panel was being lifted, a very small human girl could be spotted. She was trapped underneath and looked no older than six or seven years of age. However the support beam attached to the panel was stuck wedged under the wreckage, crushing the girl.
Yoshika crouched down. "She's alive. But barely." She reported as she clicked open the med kit and loaded a hypospray. "We need to clear some of the wreckage off of her, we might be able to pull her out. Then I can assess her injuries."
It didnt take long for them to remove the debris enough as a group to allow the dr access to the child.
The hypospray managed to wake the young girl, bringing her back to consciousness. She had bright blue eyes, full of fear and pain.
"Hey there," Yoshika said softly. "We're going to get you out of here ok. Can you tell me your name?"
At first the girl struggled to speak. She seemed overwhelmed by what was happening and the surroundings she had woken up in. "E...Ellie..."
"Ok Ellie. I'm Yoshika. I'm a nurse, and that man over there is Thomas. He's working out a way to get you free. Don't be scared now. We're going to save you." Yoshika replied softly. She looked down at the tricorder. "Can you tell me if it hurts anywhere?"
"My legs... my arms... and my tummy..." Ellie said weakly. Yoshika nodded. It was obvious that the debris was slowly crushing her fragile body, and they needed to get her free as soon as possible.
"Thats good Ellie. Now, can you tell me where you're from?"
Thomas paused. Was it a good idea to wake the child considering her condition, let alone talking. He maintained his silence
As the Commander and the others attempted to clear more of the wreckage, Yoshika kept Ellie talking and alert. Then suddenly she began to cough, a few splatters of blood escaping her mouth. "Hurry up if you can Commander! We need her out of here fast!" Yoshika called.
"Am I... going to... die?" Ellie asked weakly.
Yoshika turned her attention back to Ellie. "Not if I can help ot sweetie. Just hold on for a little longer. It might hurt, but try to breathe normally OK."
Ellie didn't respond, she just stared up at the ceiling trying to breathe. Yoshika rushed over towards Thomas. She started to grab some of the debris and began to help move it off of her.
Then suddenly, the one sound everyone feared echoed through the room. The long flat tone from Yoshika's tricorder.
"Kuso! Kuso! Kuso!" Yoshika cursed as she kicked the debris with her boot. Turning away from the tricorder and the now silent Ellie. She looked down at the floor, fists clenched as she tried her hardest not to burst out into tears. "Why? Why does it have to be like this?!" She muttered.
"War does not discriminate against the victims. However if we transport her immediately to the Tokyo, there may still be hope." Thomas replied hopeful but doubtful
Ralen heard the commotion from the corridor - urgent voices, debris being moved, and then that terrible flatline tone. Through the doorway, he could see Yoshika standing over rubble, her fists clenched. And underneath the debris...
The memories hit him - small bodies in the ruins of Hualan, children trapped in collapsed shelters, parents screaming through smoke-filled streets. Except they weren't his memories. His hand gripped the doorframe as the symbiont's inherited memories threatened to overwhelm him.
He could hear Yoshika's anguished voice - "Why does it have to be like this?"
He quietly backed away from the doorway and made his way back to the other crewmen that needed assistance. He'd help the living. But he couldn't walk into that room and face another dead child - even if the ones haunting him had died decades before he was born.
Suddenly their comm badges all chirped, and the familiar voice of Captain Aisaka rang out. "Tokyo to Away Teams. Return immediately. We're going to have to beam any lifesigns from the Denmark aboard with you and deal with them later." Taiga ordered. "Starbase 234 is under attack and is sending out a general distress call. Report back and take up your battlestations."
